Hotels in Vienna

by Orta

Has anyone stayed at Hotel Ibis Wien Mariahilf (Mariahilfer Gurtel 22-24) or Hotel Mercure Wien Europaplatz (Matrosengasse 6-8) or knows about the area they're in? What's the hotels like? Close to city transportation?
Thank you for your help.

RE: Hotels in Vienna

both of them are about 200-400 meters from Wien-Westbahnhof, the main trainstation of Vienna. Both are modern hotels, Ibis was built completely new some years ago, Mercure was an old hotel and was totally restored. Both are close to tram and subway. The area is not spectacular, but safe at night, Ibis has a major street with a lot of car-trafic in front, but windows are soundproof and the hotel has 15 floors or more.

Vienna by Christmas

by Orta

Hopefully coming to Vienna in December for the Christmas market. Can anyone recommend a good hotel to stay in that is central to most attractions and is good value for money.
Thanks!

The Pension Neuer Markt is centrally located, cheap (certainly by Vienna standards -- singles are Euros 73-93 (shower in room or down hall), doubles start at Euros 88), and clean. Don't be put off by negative reviews -- some people seem to expect the Sheraton for under a hundred Euros a night. Some aspects are pretty basic, but the building is charming, the location is utterly amazing, and the staff is friendly and helpful. I suggest booking very soon for Christmas...

Well, I'm a great fan of the König von Ungarn, which has unbeatable location and ambience. Of course it isn't cheap but I do think it's good value - particularly if you're taking a family with you. I've stayed in Vienna during Advent and then last year for Christmas itself. Wherever you stay, you've certainly got a treat in store!

Travel Tips for Vienna

by JennyTheOnly

You should go in the Prater or look in (or get on top of) the Stephansdom. Inside of it its really beautiful! If you want to , you can also look at the Zoo . You can also visite the Schloss Schönbrunn from inside ... they will tell you about living times in there ...
I think they also have 'tours' in other languages inside...
A ride on the Riesenrad is also good (if you have children I´m sure they will enjoy it!)
I hope you will enjoy!!!!;-) Well I dont miss anything , I am here most of my life... ;-)))))
I like th 'Böhmische Prater' most because there is my favorite thing to ride on ! Its a high jumping thing... can´t discribe that so good...
Well I enjoy that every time ;-)

Michaelerplatz - Labors of Hercules

by yooperprof

Lorenzo Mattielli (1688-1748) created four monumental sculptures of the Labors of Hercules to adorn the central gateway from Michaelerplatz into the heart of the Hofburg Complex. (Mattielli also created the sculptural grouping on the facade of St. Michael's Church opposite - see the photo on my Michaelerkirche page.) I'm not sure which of the Labors this figure is meant to represent - could it be Hercules' battle with the Hydra? Incidentally, one of Hercules' adventures reportedly brought him north from Greece up to the Danube River. In 18th century iconography, the Habsburg Dynasty often identified itself with the great Hercules - or rather, the Habsburgs wished to be associated with the great fearless hero.

Rooftops

by Sharrie

Rooftops sighting can be an interesting past time. It's no surprise that many people spend a great deal of time & $$$ dressing up their facade, yet, they hardly pay attention to the rooftops!

Most had not anticipated the invention of plane I suppose! ;-)

If you've been to Barcelona & have seen Gaudi's rooftops, then you'd be surprised at what one's ingenuity can do to make an architecture stands out.

Monument to Goethe

by bugulma

Monument to Goethe, the famous German writer, is situated near of Hofburg Park and opposite Schiller Platz. Interesting thing is Goete haven't been to Vienna. In any way, the monument was placed in 1900. The interesting fact is the special comission gathered money but they needed 13 years that to get the exact ammount :-)

The city of Vienna is unlike...

by cobrioc

The city of Vienna is unlike any other big city, as Vienna is not a city that never sleeps. Everything generallty closes after midnight and there are no 24-
hour eateries or even transport service. They say the cabbies go home after the last theatre performance of the evening.
There is a certain collective personality of the people of Vienna. They are very hospitable, but for thr Viennese to help you out, you must approach them. Even if you are just asking for directions you generosity and goodwill will astound many, especially those from other big cities. There is a lot of history in Vienna:this comes from the events, which have occured in the past, that have helped.
