Very nice pension in the heart of Vienna
by sendbad about Pension Lehrerhaus
It was very pleasent stay . Very clean and big rooms(the one with private toilet and bath). In a very quite area,10 min walking to the old town, and 5 min to the metro station.
There is a supermarket in the same building, and alot of restaurants and cafes around.
Great Vienna Pension
by DueSer about Hotel-Pension Bosch
Located on a quiet street just a short walk from Vienna's botanical gardens & the Belvedere Museum (home to Klimt's "The Kiss"), this nice pension is a perfect base for exploring the city. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the smaller room, where I stayed, had a toilet just across the hall. There was a couch, tv, and nice view of the neighborhood from my window. Breakfast is served in a large dining room every morning and the food was very good. There are also laundry facilities available.
The tub/shower is located a ways from most of the rooms but that's the only problem and for the great room at a reasonable price, it's a small complaint.
They only take cash. Close to several tourist sites and the subway without feeling like you are right downtown and yet you're not so far out of the city center that it takes a long time to get where you want to go.

Pensions In Vienna?

Pension Suzanne is abiout 400 feet from the operahouse, which is next to a subway/train station, and at least one tram route. Excellent location, transportationi-wise. About 100Euro for 2.
Only drawback is it's above street level (maybe that's a plus) so one must take an elevator to your floor.

I am going to be in Vienna for the first time in late June. Can anyone recommend a pleasant pension or other family-run accomodation which is reasonably-priced and near to public transport? Thanks

Hi ! You may try Hostel Ruthensteiner. Its near the Westbahnhof. Nice and reasonably-priced accomodation. You can check details on their website.

Pension Dr. Geissler is right near the city centre behind the Dom.
The location is also perfect as the Airport bus last stop is just in front of this pension.
Check the site for details.

Don't think this is family -run but is is very convenient, relatively small and reasonably priced: Hotel Austria Wien on Fleischmarkt. Two blocks from the Underground/ rams. Walking distance to St. Stephens. Cabs around the corner, yet on a quiet street.

Gay Life in Vienna

Can anyone tell me about gay life in Viena? Any suggestion for sites online as well? Thanks!

The Rosa-Lila Villa, Linke Weinzeile 102, is the major gay and lesbian community center in Vienna. It's just a few blocks south of the Naschmarkt. The Villa has a nice cafe, occasionally it puts on dances, and it's a good source for what's happening at the various clubs and nightspots around the city. Another place that I liked was the Cafe Berg, Berggasse 8, just around the corner from the Freud House. Good brunches there!

Thanks. They sound like they are near the center too, so should be easy to get to.

The Rosa-Lila Villa would be my first suggestion. Other recommendations from the guidebooks on my desk are Why Not? www.why-not.at on the Tiefer Graben, Café Savoy or Santo Spirito.

Pension Wild is a gay-friendly hotel near the city center. I'm not gay myself, but my wife and I enjoyed our stay there (especially the outstanding free breakfast). I believe there is a gay-only spa somewhere in the hotel. More info in my travel pages here:

Enjoy your visit.
