Pension Neuer Markt
The Pension Neuer Markt is a cosy and comfortable pension with a very good location at the heart of Vienna (Inner Stadt area). Famous attractions such as the Albertina, St Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom), Hofburg (Imperial Palace), Staatsoper (State Opera) and many of the museums are within walking distance. The pension is also located next to the famous shopping area of Karntner Strasse, with many shops and restaurants.
As for the pension, the rooms are clean and comfortable (although small which is to be expected). The free breaskfast is nice and the staff are very friendly. Also, it is affordable compared to some of the hotels in Vienna. Overall, my wife and I had a very good experience staying here :-)

Great location, reasonable price, breakfast incl.

I stayed at Pension Neuermarkt. It has different rates for shared/private bathroom, single or double room. The LOCATION CAN'T BE BEAT! Literally a block from ST. Stephens Square, barely a 5 minute walk to the Opera House and the Ring. Safe to walk around at night. (i was there by myself, female 31 and felt safe) The hotel was clean, good breakfast, nice front desk staff. Follow the directions from the website as the hotel doesnt face Neuermarkt but the street, Seilergasse 9. It has a sign, ring the bell and it's on the second floor, there is an elevator.

Great Location
Had a great stay at Pensione Neuer Markt in Vienna. Directly in the city center, one block from St. Stephens square, just a few blocks from the Opera House and Ringstrasse.
Unique Quality: Pensione is located on Second Floor. The entrance is not on the actual "market" side, but on Seilergasse. Look for the small hotel sign. Nice breakfast included. Helpful front desk staff. Internet was not working while I was there. Good size rooms, clean, relatively quiet. TV, couch, table w/ chairs in room. You can pick a room with shared bath or private.

Pension Neuer Markt
A nice boarding house situated directly at Neuer Markt, a cute little square with a fountain.
It is ideally situated between the Stephansplatz and the Staatsoper (opera house), and near many museums.
We had a nice room, also furnished with a sofa and two armchairs in an old-fashioned style, corresponding to the baroque style of the building. From the window, we had a great view on the square.
Breakfast was really good too : a large choice of breads, jams, cereals, and cake. Furniture also in the style of the building, which gave our breakfast a particular atmosphere :-)
We paid around 60 euros per person per night, breakfast included

Curiouser and Curiouser
We found this place thru the tourist office at the Hauptbahnhoff. Very plain from the outside. Just an apartment house. The Pension has a reception desk and the breakfast room on one level. A grand red-carpeted semi-circular stairway to the level above where the rooms are. Yes there is an elevator, but how many times do you get to a regal staircase like this?
Unique Quality: The room was a little cramped.
People eating ice-cream at seven in the morning. Twenty-first century Mozarts wearing period regalia and Oakleys.
Wein is a fascinating city.

A great place to stay in the very centre of Vienna
Pension Neuer Markt is in the very centre of Vienna, just about 50 meters from Kaerntner Strasse.Take the lift up to the 2nd floor to get to the hotel-reception there.
Take a closer look at the great facade of this building - it dates back to the great time of the end of the 19th century, when all the palaces along the Ringstrasse were built.
Unique Quality: Have a look at the link , and take a closer look for the prices as well !
The best thing about this hotel is the excellent location : In the very centre and at the same time in a quiet area with almost no car-trafic at all. All rooms have TV, radio and private facilities !

there is a limited number of day-tickets for parking in the centre, it is just 4,60 Euros per day, BUT you have to find a free parking-lot on your own...

City Centre Living
We arrived at the train station with no hotel. We eventually managed to get a room at a hotel literally 300 metres away from the Stephansdom, you cannot get any closer to the old town.
We managed to get a room for 100 Euros via the hotel reservation centre at the train station. I think the normal rate is around 140/180 Euros.
Unique Quality: I liked staying here despite it being a little on the noisy side. The hotel occupies the second and third floors of the building.
It has one of those old european lifts and a marble staircase leading to the different floors.

City Sights
We are looking to stay in Vienna for 3 days in early January. I have been looking at the various hotels available but I am not sure how choose the best location - ie most central for tourist sites (access by foot whenever possible).
Can anyone advise?

We stayed at the Pension Neuer Markt, right in the centre of Vienna. 300m from Stepahsdom, a 5 minute walk from the Opera House, and round the corner from the main shopping street. Can't get much more central than that.
We booked our hotel at the Hotel Reservation Centre at the train station, and also got a discount. I think we paid around 100 Euros per night for the room, which considering the location was great.
However, the public transport is excellent, so staying outside the city, which would be cheaper, would be no problem, as you could just hop on the metro.
