Already in the Roman times, a village was situated along the banks of the river Donau (Danube). The Romans made a fortified town out of it in their constant struglle to keep Eastern invasions under their thumb. Vindobonum grew slowly and even when the Roman empire fell, the town became bigger and more important in the region. When the Holy Roman Empire choose Vienna to one of their capitols, the city got yet another impuls. In trade, Vienna became important as link between the Western and Eastern societies and a junction of various trading routes over land and along the Donau (Danube) as well.
