train journey

by GLawrie

I am travelling by train Vienna to Zurich and because of the rail pass I have I do not want to pass through Germany. How do I ensure the train journey on the timetable does not pass through Germany?

Re: train journey

You can explore rail routes on http://www.bueker.net/trainspotting/maps.php

If you find your train (date & time) on:

http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml

then click the arrow you will get a list of all intervening stations. You can then see if your particular train passes through Germany. Type 'zuerich' into the searchbox to allow for the umlaut.

Most trains from Vienna to Innsbruck (and Zuerich) go via Rosenheim (Germany) but don´t stop there. In legal termes you don´t leave Austria.

Use the online timetable planner, and put "Feldkirch" in as a VIA station. That way you will only get routings through Austria and Switzerland. The direct trains to Zürich that leave at 7:40 and 9:40 are probably the best ones to take.

Thank you very much for your response. The info is really helpful - just what I wanted to know.

Thank you for the most helpful info.

Yes, while legally I don't go to Germany, I think that still qualifies as a country for the rail pass. Thanks anyway.

Travel Tips for Vienna

Vienna History: from Vindobona to Medieval time

by Pavlik_NL

Already in the Roman times, a village was situated along the banks of the river Donau (Danube). The Romans made a fortified town out of it in their constant struglle to keep Eastern invasions under their thumb. Vindobonum grew slowly and even when the Roman empire fell, the town became bigger and more important in the region. When the Holy Roman Empire choose Vienna to one of their capitols, the city got yet another impuls. In trade, Vienna became important as link between the Western and Eastern societies and a junction of various trading routes over land and along the Donau (Danube) as well. 5th District / Margarethen: Schlossquadrat

by morgenhund

In the 5th district, there are a lot of tucked away places - which offer very reasonable food and drink and are not so full of tourists that you can't dare to venture into them. For me, the Schlossquadrat by Margarethenplatz is one place I would always recommend - here I have frequently enjoyed a lunch outside, had great wine with cheeseboards - ooh they're good, celebrated my 25th birthday, met my girlfriend and also celebrated moving into my flat which I bought - I brought my parents here due to not having a kitchen to cook and celebrate! My home and adopted hometown! The fifth district has become my adopted home and after having travelled around a lot it is always nice to get home and enjoy a meal in my flat.

Meeting a squirrel!

by tiabunna

The photo with this tip may seem remarkably trite to people from the Northern Hemisphere, but we were totally excited when we saw this little squirrel in the Schonbrunn Gardens. They aren’t found in Australia, and this was the first we saw. Maybe many of the other tourists in the gardens live in cities where squirrels aren’t commonly found, because quite a few stopped their walks to take photos. Either way, he happily posed for the cameras before disappearing again – we later saw others there.

19th district - Doebling

by pakistanibrain

Kahlenberg is a small hill in the North of Vienna that offers a view over the city. There is a restaurant and a viewpoint on the roof of the souvenir shop. The main TV transmission tower for Vienna is also fixed on Kahlenberg. This is definitely a must-see place for every Vienna tourist.

Doebling (that's how the 19th district is called) is the most expensive residential district in Vienna and also home to several embassies (including the Pakistani Embassy). Living in Doebling is a status symbol itself.

Wiener Christkindlmarkt

by Fam.Rauca

In the Weeks before Christmas you will find numerous markets across Vienna's squares and pedestrian zed zones.
The most famous festivity is the Viennese Christmas Market, on the town hall place.
The stalls sell mainly small gifts and Christmas decorations, as well as punch and hot spiced wine to warm you on cold winter evenings.
This party lasts from end November until at the 24th December, on the Christmas Eve.
