Central, but could give it a miss

Bad (2.0 of 5.0 stars)

Traveling over the holidays, I found that accommodations were going quick. The like-minded travelers were eager to take advantage of the free time, yet many places were closing their doors for the holidays. That meant fewer places and higher prices. While being somewhat in a mind to have a guarantee of a place to put my head and not rough it, I booked at Westend.

If you are a budget traveler and find no other enticing offers, stay here. But if you have a few dollars/euros to spare or you find something of equal price, I'd be inclined to point you anywhere else.

It is a money maker for the owners, with little love or care for the guests. Rooms are clean but they are cramped. There are few electrical outlets for charging, Water pressure is very low and at least in our room, hot water was the exception rather than the rule. They do have WiFi, but signal is extremely weak. The common space is very small for such a large hostel, making socializing next to impossible. Most people were simply sitting in the stairs to get the strongest WiFi.

Everything costs extra. If you need a towel, it is 4EUR. If you want breakfast, it is extra. Even with a basic breakfast, if you want juice it is extra, if you want an egg it is extra. And with all this payment, bring cash. They do not accept any credit cards.

Unique Quality: The key to this place is that it is on the more economical side for the true budget traveler. That and it is ~3 minute walk from Westbahnhof (West train station), and ~15 minute walk from the heart of the old town.

Directions: 3 minute walk from Westbahnhof

A gem

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)

We stayed here for two nights in 2004 on the Inter Rail trip. The West End Hostel is located only 5 mins walk from West Banhoff and I have to say it was a wonderful place. The staff are very helpful and the rooms are clean, airy and spacious. It has internet access, a great eating area (price includes breakfast) and beer from a machine.

The price was about 19yoyos per person in a room for 4 with private shower and toilet. This was about average for Vienna but compared to my last hostel in 1994, this was the Hilton!!

The location is fairly central for shopping and eating. Avoiding the touristy areas cos the prices are a lot lower. To get to the touristy spots the nearest tram/metro is 2 mins walk away and the buses are just around the corner. Expect to walk about an hour to St. Stephen's Platz. Or get a lift of a man in a Porsche 911 - haha!!!

I'd recommend this place very highly.

Unique Quality: If I had to make any negaitve remark it was the glass door on the loo (toilet) in our room which we shared with a German couple. Anyone could easily see you 'dropping the kids off at the pool' - if you catch my drift.

Directions: When you leave Westbanhoff go straight across the main road and veer to your right. You'll be at the top of a large shopping street and now should be on the right side of the street. Take a right turn BEFORE you go down this street. You're 30 secs away.
