West ends alternative scene
I had a great stay at the West End city hostel. It's a little plain in decor but there were all new beds, mattresses, big locker bins with lockes provided and many clean bathrooms. There was free breakfast in the morning and all the hosts & occupents were nice and friendly. It gets it's name due to the close distance from the Westbahnhof train station and I felt every bit safe in and around the hostel.
I loved the neighborhood and it's hip underground scene, a rebelish contrast to central vienna with it's reggea bars, sushi restaurants, and skateboard shops.
Cost is about 16 Euro a bed to start, open 24 hours, but has a early check out at 1030.

A gem
We stayed here for two nights in 2004 on the Inter Rail trip. The West End Hostel is located only 5 mins walk from West Banhoff and I have to say it was a wonderful place. The staff are very helpful and the rooms are clean, airy and spacious. It has internet access, a great eating area (price includes breakfast) and beer from a machine.
The price was about 19yoyos per person in a room for 4 with private shower and toilet. This was about average for Vienna but compared to my last hostel in 1994, this was the Hilton!!
The location is fairly central for shopping and eating. Avoiding the touristy areas cos the prices are a lot lower. To get to the touristy spots the nearest tram/metro is 2 mins walk away and the buses are just around the corner. Expect to walk about an hour to St. Stephen's Platz. Or get a lift of a man in a Porsche 911 - haha!!!
I'd recommend this place very highly.
