Charleroi Tip

The ' Carolos ' (inhabitants of Charleroi) are well known for their enthusiasm, their generosity, their friendliness and their joie de vivre ...To them, a friendly welcome and hospitality really mean something. With its pedestrian zones, its squares, its parks, its arteries and its shopping malls as well as its touristic and leisure infrastructures, Charleroi is a comfortable city perfectly suited for walking and shopping. Every Sunday the weekly market attracts thousands of people, some of them coming from far away. Its warm and picturesque athmosphere should be missed on no account ...
Charleroi Tip

Charleroi was founded in 1666, which is relatively late compared to the other cities in Belgium. The Spanish who ruled the Low Countries in the 17th century built a fortification close to the village of Charnoy. This fortification was meant to keep the troops of the imperialist French king Louis XIV out of the Spanish possessions. The star-shaped stronghold received the name CHARLE-ROY (after the Spanish king Charles II). However, in 1667-1678 the French took the new city and expanded it. Already then, the difference between upper and lower city was made.
Vigie the best
by rickyvilla81
That is the motto of the tallest building in town, La Vigie, the student accomodation of the UT. It was on the thirteenth floor that I lived, overlooking Marsupilami and the "Vicious Circle" Square Hiernaux. The view is good, except you can see Charleroi.
Keep on running

Traditionally a poor town, Charleroi nonetheless has quite a good sporting credence. One night in town I met a large group of people from England (I couldn't believe it, why would they come here?) who were taking part in the boating tournament just outside town. I never went to watch but it sounds very popular. Then you have the cycling - the legacy of Eddie Merckx has meant that le cyclisme is in the blood for Belgians, and I saw races begin here a couple of times. And if you like to run, then the annual Dix Miles de Charleroi is like a mini-marathon. I should go back and take part.
