Restaurant in Grand' Place

by Picarello

There is a wonderful steak restaurant on the Grand' Place that does fillet of beef "sur pierre", on a hot stone. Can anyone tell me the name of the restaurant (left hand side of the grand buildings) and whether it is open on a Monday evening?

I suspect this will be too late but anyway the name you are looking for is "La Cervoise"...

Travel Tips for Mons

Three different universities...

by Djinn76

Mons is quite a little town but there are three different official universities...
* Faculté Polytechnique de Mons : indeed an independent engineering school (not only civil architecture but also electricity, mechanics,...)
* Fucam : an independent commercial school
* UMH : university with different faculties. Mons, altough a real city also has this student spirit you could find in Leuven for example.

WIDE ENOUGH FOR HORSE AND CARRIAGE!

by lmkluque

This photo is of a carriage gate that caught my eye. These houses across the street from Sainte Waudru Collegiate Church once belonged to the 'Canonesses,' rich women who joined the religious community initially founded by Sainte Wandru.

The Canonesses were influential in the town from the 11th century until 1794 when they were suppressed.

The name of the town

by annase

Name 'Mons' derives from a French word 'mont' for a hill or mound. 'Mont' then became 'Mons' with the help of time, invasions and different accents. In Flemish, the name of the town is 'Bergen' ('mountains').

Catching horse hair from the dragon during doudou!

by ptitetoile

This is a tradition during the legendary fight of St Georges against the dragon that takes place on the Grand Place on the Trinity Sunday. Everybody try to get some hair for the tail of the dragon because it brings luck!

See the travelogue "Mons, town of the doudou" for more info"

Monkey of the Grand Garde.

by DanielF

When in Mons, you have to pay a visit to this Medieval monkey. Nobody knows which is its origin, but they will tell you that if you pet it, it will bring you luck.

So many centuries of caressing hands have left its head really shiny. But it still works, at least it did for me. Or maybe I am a lucky guy. Yes, definitely.
