Travel Tips for Thuin
A to-be-built resort near Thuin (Froidchapelle)
by Groentje
Not really Thuin, but Froidchapelle. We spent a weekend here in April 2004 with our football team in a resort from the Landal group, a Dutch resort enterprise. The resort is definitely not finished, but the location is really nice; not as much fun as the Ardennes when it comes to mountainbiking, but for the rest it's pretty okay. The evenings with friends: dancing, drinking, talking, commemorating, ...
Just plain old fun!
Les Lacs de l'Eau d' Heure
by Mahieu
The lakes of L' Eau d' Heure are THE place to be for water freaks: windsurfing, sailing, jet ski, scuba-diving, motor-boating, but also walking, mountain-biking, karting, ... is possible. All this in an unspoilt natural setting. It can be pretty crowded during the summer months, but as from the beginning of September you'll have the place almost to yourself. Check the weather conditions before you come, because not all sports are possible during every time of the year.
Different lodging possibilities: bungalows, campings, gites, ...
The lakes are situated more or less 25 km from Thuin.
The castle of Leers-et-Fosteau
by Mahieu
Leers-et-Fosteau is the village I used to live in. Allthough it only has 300 inhabitants, it does have a castle! :-)
The Castle dates back from the 14th century. It has a beautiful gothic room and what's great about it, is that it houses continuous exhibitions of antique furniture, but also cultural events, classic concerts, ...
The gardens are well worth a visit too.
To get there, take the route from Thuin to Beaumont, the castle is on your left hand side.
Aulne's Abbey
by Mahieu
5 km from Thuin, in the middle of the beautiful Sambre valley, you can find the Abbey of Aulne. It has been founded during the 7th century. You can still admire the impressive vestiges of the abbey. Allthough it's not as impressive as the abbey of Villers-La-Ville, it is still worth a visit if you're in the neighourhood. Individual visits are only in French. Guided tours possible for groups, in Dutch or English.
Other point of interest on the site is the brewery of Val de Sambre, where the Abbaye d'Aulne beer is brewn.
Thuin: very cosy city!
by Mahieu
I used to live in the beautiful city of Thuin for about 3 years. Thuin is not very touristic, allthough some tourists on their way to the Ardennes visit it during summer. It's really a nice, quiet village and great to walk in for a couple of hours. Thuin has a naval past, which can still be discovered nowadays.
