les incontournables, inevitable things to see

by violette_ca

Bonjour, Hi folks,

Je serai en Belgique du 9 juillet au 20 juillet. J'aimerais visiter la ville de Dinant. Est-ce qu'il y a des trucs incontournable à ne pas manquer? Je n'aurai que le train pour me déplacer.

I will be in Belgium july 9th until july 20th. I would like to visit Dinant. Is there somethings that i can't miss to see?

Have nice trips, bon voyage!!!

The citadel, of course.

You should get the little cable car up to the citadel (departs from the cathedral) - absolutely spectacular views. It is very worth doing the tour of the citadel - it's the only way to see inside it and it is very interesting - especially the WWII trench that is angled from a bomob (obviously a reconstruction but plays havoc with your senses - some guy was in there with his dog and his dog was insanely disorientated).

Re Re Bonsoir Violette,

Jean-Pierre.

Travel Tips for Dinant

The téléphérique (gondola) to the Citadel

by Martinewezel

The town is down in the valley and the citadel is upon the rock. To get there you can either take the gondola at the foot of the rock, or park your car upon the rock.

For those among you with claustrofobia, there are stairs just next to the cable lift. Same price :-)

the church lies beautiful against the rocks

by MATIM

The church is build in 934. In 1228 there was tragical damage at the church cause by a move of a rock above the church, 36 people where killed.
The church is rebuild after the damage in mesh gothic style.
Don't forget to have a look at the font build in 1472.
At the church you can find the largest glass window from Europe, showing scenes from the bible open every day from 10.00 till 18.00 hour

Dinants history ... a city under siege

by Pavlik_NL

Dinant, second important city unde the prince-bishop of Liege, became already under attack when situated far from Liege, it always was left to it's own faith, when the rivaling Bouvignes tried to get rid of it's competitors on the cuprum-craft-market. Namur (Namen), the other town on the Meuse that also has a history of sieges and attacks, belonged to this kingdom and both towns competed in getting destroyed the most (as it almost seems if you follow both town's past). The most hoorific defeath was against the Bourgondians, that besieged Dinant in seven days and then threw 800 citizens, tied up two by two, into the river Meuse (a sport that has been repeated various time afterwards). In the Great War (WW 1) the Germans destroy 3/4 of Dinant and leave it as a ruin. Charles de Gaulle himself got wounded on the bridge in this battle, therefor it bares his name (the bridge, not the battle (-: )

Parking tip

by Martinewezel

The centre of Dinant can be pretty busy and it's not easy to get rid of your car.
besides, there are parking meters everywhere.

We parked our car on the parking lot upon the rock, and took the gondola down to the centre. 5,50 euro/person, but the entrance to the citadel + guided tour is included. Afterwards we spent a few hours in Dinant. No stress with parking meters and the gondola ride is fun too.

The hanging rock of the citadelle

by Pavlik_NL

Dinant may have been for many times under siege, a keeping threat is the one of the enormous cliff on which the citadelle is built. This rock has done damage through the ages, by pieces (smaller or larger) coming down upon the houses from time to time. Latest was in 1995, when a piece of the cliff let go and destroyed a few houses. The rock now is supported by many pins that stick deep into the stone. You can see the pins as pimples all over the rock's surface. Dinant is the fondest memory of Dinant ... the view to this town's centre is just unique!
