Groenplaats
by husain
Groenplaats, or `green square' is Antwerps city centre. The name referes to the cemetary of the cathedral that used to be there in medieval times, and was enbordered with little trees and greenery. The cemetary was removed in the 17th century, by the then emperor of Austria, since it was considered unhygenic to have cymetaries in city centres...
The statue of Peter Paul Rubens and the imposing figure of Our Lady's Cathedral are the some of the prominemt visual landmarks of Antwerp.
Antwerpen = Hand Werpen
by Imaniac
The story behind the name of Antwerpen is a true urban legend. In the old days a giant roamed around the river Schelde. He forced everyone passing by to pay a tol. There was one man who really didn't want to pay the giant. Therefor he drew his sword and choppped off the giant's hand and threw it away. In Dutch (the common spoken language in Antwerpen) to throw means 'werpen'. And of course hand is also hand in Dutch. So you see Hand Werpen (To throw a hand) quickly became Ant Werpen On the Meir you can see a statue of a hand. It's supposed to be the hand of the giant in the story. In real size of course.

Another place that is be destroyed by building the TGV (High-Speed-Train) is the Koningin Astrid Plein (Queen Astrid Square) in front of the Central Station. I did not take a picture of it because it was to late in the evening. Trains will enter the Central Station and leaving underground the Station again under the Queen Astrid Square. Now everything is under construction. New pictures will show up after my next visit in Antwerp. Enjoy now the beautiful flowerbeds who went there before. Now it is one big hole :-(

Opposite the Saint Charles Borromeo’s Church, you will find the Municipal Library. On this site, there is the Statue of Hendrik Conscience (1812 – 1883), the 19th century writer who “thought his people to read”.
