How many days in Antwerp??

by alex0312

Hello everyone,

My girlfriend and I are going back to Belgium in the beginning of December. The first time we went to Brugge and Brussels. We spent a few days in Brugge and 2 days in Brussels. As a result, we saw nothing in Brussels. This time we will be going back to Brussels to see all that we missed and to Antwerp as well. We will also go to Amsterdam.

Would anyone be able to tell me whether or not 3 days are enough to see Antwerp or would 4 days be more adequate? We do not want to miss half of Antwerp as we did Brussels last time. Any advice regarding this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again,
Alex

Three full days in Antwerp would be adequate, as it will give you time not to rush, if you see what I mean! There is a very good walking tour starting from the Tourist Info Office and i recommend that you take that first of all. The guide we had was very information and pointed out all sorts of things that we might never have noticed on our own, plus places that we could visit later.

3 days will be enough. Antwerp is not a big city (bigger then Brugge but smaller then Brussels). Ofcourse you will not have seen everything, but most of it.
Enjoy your stay in Belgium.

Travel Tips for Antwerp

Street performances

by Sinjoor

All through the city, like in many other large city, street performers belonging to all kinds of disciplines can be observed in every season. Although summer does tend to yield a greater number of them than the colder seasons. Area's where one is most likely to run into them are the Meir shopping area, Grand Square, Green square and the old center of town in general.

He you tourist, don't forget to have a look at our great cathedral (Onze-Lieve-Vrouw). It is one of the most beautifull buildings in the surrounding!
A very nice small street that's been there for allready a long very long time is 'De Vlaaikes gang' and is there aren't many people how know is but is very typical for the old city. This little street is located between the Hoogstraat and the Suikerrui. This city is always alive!!!! The people like to go out for a drink. In the summer you should go on Monday to the city because then all the young (and old) people are there. I don't know how to say this but in the tower of the cathedral, someone is 'ringing the bells'!!! on Monday!

Het Steen along the Schelde river

by cadzand

Het Steen : This is the oldest still existing building in Antwerpen (ca 1200). In fact these are the remains of a much bigger fortress, that was built to protect the walled inner city. It was also the house of the Burgrave. The cross opposite the entry recalls the time that Het Steen was used as a prison. In front of this Cross the convicts who were sentenced to death made their last prayer. Nowadays Het Steen is used as a museum. Here is located the National Maritime Museum. It contains a beautiful collection of old and not so old ship models, paintings, pictures, maritime utensil, ship parts, instruments and decorations.
There is also an outdoor part of the Maritime Museum.
In front of Het Steen you see the statue of Lange Wapper. Lange Wapper, a legendary figure, who was feared by many inhabitants of Antwerpen.

Antwerp, World Book Capital 2004

by tompt

Each year since 2001 a city is choosen to be the world book capital. The city will host events to promote the reading of books. Antwerp called the project ABC2004.
Read more about it at: http://www.abc2004.be/
A part of the project is "the city of letters". Every letter of the alphabet is presented in an artistic way by two artists. The Y :
In the Leistraat John Körmeling and Bas Haring made a fork in the road. The y stands in their opinion for choices. Choices make the world clear, but they do force you into boxes too.

At both sides o fthe street they placed two trafficsigns. They force you to make a choice go either in the left group or the right group. Every month there are different choices. Choices like: flemings left, wallons right, or writers left and artists right. But the ones we photographed was a very difficult choise. It translates: murderers left and liars right.

The signs are placed at 20 october 2004 and stay there untill the end of the project ABC2004 at 22 april 2005.

John Körmeling and Bas Haring are both dutch by the way...........

Visit the square of the Wapper, a side street of the Meir where you find this beautiful fountain. You find here also the Rubens House. More information about the Rubens House you find in my “Must see activities” or in my travelogues.
