moving to Antwerpen

by belladonna41

Hello! My name is Debora, currently living in the US.We will be moving to Antwerpen in the next few months, and since I have a daughter who will go to the AIS (American school) would like to know how far is Antwerper from Ekeren (where the school is located). What is the best area to live in Antwerpen (when the school is still a not too far..).
Considering I am italian and I love food (cannot live without my pasta, bread, salame, prosciutto..) is there any italian market? any shop where I can buy my stuff?
Culturally is Antwerpen alive, with galleries, theaters, cinemas...?
Are there some languages school where I can study Dutch? (like inlingua...etc..).
I am fluent in english, french, little bit of Deutch.
would love some informations.Thanks debora

Hi Debora - A great source of information when relocating to another country are the expats groups. They were definitely my lifeline when I moved from the U.S. to India. :-)) Google 'antwerp expats' and you'll find several listings. Good luck with the move!

Ekeren just North (5 Miles) of Antwerpen; see:
http://maps.google.nl/maps?hl=nl&ie=UTF8&ll=51.287044,4.442253&spn=0.156746,0.444603&z=12

Best area: one of the suburbs that is served with one of the local tram lines; see:

There will be special stores; use the Yellow Page":
Civiltà Del Bere
Reyndersstraat 2b, 2000 Antwerpen

Dutch Language lessons; try:
Huis van het Nederlands
Carnotstraat 110, 2060 Antwerpen

Have a look at member irisbe Antwerp page.

Hi Deborah,

I live in Antwerp and was born there.
The distance between Antwerpen-center and Ekeren is +/- 5km. Ekeren and enviroment are not really rhe most beautyful places in Antwerp, and if you want to have good Italian and Mediterrean restaurants in your enviroment, I advice you to go live in the centre. Antwerp is a city of 1.000.000 people in the hole agglomeration, so there is always something to do. (metoplis is one of the greatest cinemas in the world, for example...). There ary a lot of evening-schools, and I can asure there is one in the neighborougd where you go live.

Good luck, "ne Sinjoor"

(slang for "someone of Antwerp")

Travel Tips for Antwerp

Eat Chocolate

by dzni

Chocolate abounds in this town, as I'm sure it does in most of Belgium. This country is the chocolate capitol of the world, as far as I'm concerned. Anyway, there are chocolate shops most everywhere. Additionally, my favorite is Neuhaus (pronounced: noy-house).

by Pegasus74

sit on one of the benches facing the ornate Renaissance Town Hall and elaborately gabled guild houses, which together complement the cobbled Grote Markt (or Grand Place). The spectacular Brabo fountain planted in the heart of the square draws anyone closer to it to scrutinize its beauty. And because its base is sloped a little, the water re-enters its arteries to be pumped out again. This way the square is wetted only a small portion surrounding the fountain. Stuck to one of the few benches, I was fascinated by the activities around this heart - scout groups having a game or two, a pair of kids bicycling through sprinkling waters, horse carriages entering and re-entering the square, the locals walking their dogs and tour guides explaining to his/her group what each attraction represent. Once in a while I'd be 'disturbed' to be someones' photographer.

In March they allowed people to go up the KBC tower (in Dutch referred to as the Boerentoren), which is unusual, the views up there are superb, unfortunately the weather wasn't all that great. I live here, so I have a few...

The cathedral

by cadzand

The interior of the Cathedral is magnificent, however many of the Masterpieces of art were stolen in the 18th century during the French Revolution.
The Cathedral is also very famous because of his magnificent collection of stained – glass windows, some of them still date from the 15th and 16th century.

by Ronald_T

On the corner of the Meir and the Wapper (a side street of the Meir) you find the Royal Palace. Due the changes on VT, I will give info that is more detailed later. I will place only pictures now and I will see what will happen after the start of VTML. To stay on VT or not to stay, that is the question ;-)
