hi guys!
My question might seem unexpected, but are there any mosques in Antwerp? and if there are, does anybody know about visiting possibilities? or is there any street or something like that where live arabs and there are located their shops? ( I'd like to get some souvenirs like arabic alphabet jewellery and etc.)
by the way, will there be any events in Antwerp at 20th-21st of August?
Best wishes from Lithuania,
Dei.
Yes, I'm sure there are so atke plenty of repelant.
Margaret,
Why plenty repellant?
The question is about mosques!! - not mosquitos!!
Doh, I must apologise misread it.
There a few mosques in Borgerhout(which is close to the city center) of Antwerp.
Antwerp apparently has 36 mosques although it is hardly the best place in the world to find "arabic alphabet jewellery": the jewellery shops around the station are mostly run by the Jewish community.
However, you can't visit them unless you are a muslim or just possibly, know one who frequents the mosque in question (but if you did, presumably you wouldn't be asking here). Your best bet would be to contact one of the muslim associations, see http://www.islamicfinder.org/worldIslamicCountry.php?country=belgium&endPoint=50&lang=&more=more&startPoint=0.
Incidentally, instead of asking this same question, for every country you are visiting, on a travel and tourism website, it would surely be better to use that website to locate mosques.

The first place I visited in Antwerp was triangle in shape Main Square (Grote Markt) and the Town Hall (Stadhuis) with Fontain Brabo in front. And it was a blast! I liked a lot the Town Hall with its hundreds colorful flags, heavy lighted at sunrise - amazing view for my eyes that time.
The present town hall was finished in 1564 in new that time Renaissance style. Antwerp was one of the most powerful European and world's cities that time.
Eat a cookie called 'Antwerps handje', drink a 'Bolleke' (beer) and have some fries at 'Frituur d'Anvers' in the middle of the night! What I love about Antwerp is that we are what you call 'a melting pot'! A lot of different kind of people actually merge as one people!!! And everyone who lives here is proud of living here! (At least most of them!! lol)
Notice the DETAILING on the tops of the Guild Houses. On the highest house is a sculpture of Saint Joris defeating the Dragon.
The detailing and the gables make the Guild Houses so charming and photogenic.
I liked soaking up the ambience in this area. yet, it's a school. haha
But not an ordinary school, the school of the 6 from Antwerp. In fact, they are more than six designers who are highlighting Belgian design since after the 6, there were other generations that are now nested in French maisons de couture.
Now, about the area.. I was there the last day of school year and saw a lot of student parties, bbqs. The terraces people were cool, soaking up the sun.. trying to get rid off those weeks of exams and project presentations.
For some pubs, go back the Academie where you would find, in my sense, one of quiet places in Antwerp without cars if I remember it well, packed with terrace pubs.
Bric à brac (Stadswaag 12) for bbqs. Well, there should be others where you can savour bbq in summer. At least, I know that this one does it perfectly right.
More historical joint: Het Waagstuk. When wandering on Stadswaag, Dannie told me it used to be the place where one weighed (waag : weigh) commodities in the past. It is now a place where to sip Geuze and Lambic beer. If i remember it well, it brews own beer.
It's also in the area that you would find the Berenbak, the pub with the ties. A huge collection of ties is hanging on the walls. Not on Stadwaag though but Minderbroedersstraat 17 *The past, the present and the future* of Belgian art and design.

A: "I fully agree with above reply. You must feel the atmosphere of Antwerp. The Groenplaats and the Grote Markt are the two squares you should see. PJ"
