It's BLU all right :)
Previously I have stayed near the Market Square, but this time, since I was in Antwerp to visit a friend who lived in the suburbs, near the tgrain station was needed. Sooo... here we are! It's expensive, pretty luxurious and so convenient to Antwerpen Centraal. The hotel was designed by the contemporary American architect, Michael Graves.
Unique Quality: The blue glow in the lobby.

Great location
We wanted a short break before going back to work and, having been to Bruges and Ghent a few times, we decided to give Antwerp a try... we booked the Astrid Plaza before i read all the reviews about the awful neighbourhood etc, anyway, we live in london and if we were scared, we'd never set foot out of the house. The hotel is very well located straight oppposite the central station. I believe that, in the near future, the Eurostar wil go directly to Antwerp (no need to change in Brussels) so it will be even better. We had a superior room, which was clean and comfortable, but not as good as some other 4* hotels-for example, the Sofitel in Ghent. Towels a bit skimply . The people at the bar and the reception were very friendly, and the public areas were clean and nicely decorated. The breakfast was very good, in terms of variety and quality. as we arrived late, we decided to have a simple meal at the Square brasserie. It was awful. The 'square' burger we were served made Burger King look like a gourmet place-it was really appalling. The wine was nice and reasonably priced. We did not use the swimming pool (too lazy). I can see what people mean by the surrounding area, it is not very salubrious or the sort of place where I would take a stroll of an evening, but , to allay anyone's fears, it is no worse than any large city and probably much safer than some, as long as you take the necessary precautions. The hotel is very well located to explore the city. we used buses and the underground, and cabs in the evening- just don't bother with the brasserie!!

Antwerps Best
As I mentioned earlier, this is very close to the main station here. I took this picture from the station, and aside a road and a park under construction, nothing else separate this hotel from the station.

Antwerps Best
This is perhaps the best hotel for tourist to stay in Antwerp, I think because it is right opposite the Gare.
Unique Quality: All four stars facilities are present..Swimming pool, massages, gym, live music, Aquatopia is free, etc..

Postmodern with a view of Centraal Station
Unique Quality: [and its interminable reconstruction...]
The lobby and rooms are good examples of stark modernism. Not my cuppa exactly -- but certainly classy. Once the Thalys is able to reach Centraal Station you'll be in business!

Antwerp's best
The very newly built hotel Astrid Plaza Hotel is an American design. It is made out of a steel construction around which the front is build.
The hotel is opposite the beautiful Central Station. The architect wanted to connect the two in design and if you look carefully, you will discover that the hotel is a “modernized” edition of that early 20th century station building. You can easily recognize the two spires.
Due to the works of the train tunnel that will give passing through the Thalys and other international trains, the comfort of the guests needed to be guaranteed. To avoid any shocks or turbulence from the passing trains, they have cut the steel pillars and added a special piece between it that will absorb every possible shock.
Unique Quality: Very interesting services... it is right opposite the central station...It has all the facilities of a 4 star hotel. free buffet B/F swimming pool, sporting facilities etc

The best hotel near Central Station
Coming out of the train station you cannot miss this hotel. It's located on the other side of the square opposite Central Station and is a very modern building in yellow and orange.
It's a 4-star hotel and a good place to stay when you are coming by train and, of course, when you don't mind paying a little bit more.
The Astrid Park Plaza has superior and executive rooms and suites. The rooms are equipped with safe, air-conditioning, minibar, TV with internet and Nintendo games, in-house movies, and special computer and fax link-ups.
They have a swimming pool, sauna, Turkish steam bath, solarium, massage area and fitness centre.
The hotel has a private garage, but make a reservation.
The shopping area is only 2 minutes walk and the historical center about 20 minutes. There is a metro stop beneath the hotel and a bus and tram stop closeby.
Next to the hotel is Chinatown with a lot of restaurants. The 'Statiestraat', a sidestreet of the square in front of the hotel, offers international restaurants, nightclubs and a movie theatre. But stay away from the area in the back of the hotel. This is not a safe place at night.
On the other side of the square, there's the Zoo and Diamond museum and I almost forgot the Aquatopia, an aquarium next to the entrance of the hotel. You won't get bored staying at this hotel.

A top location...
The Astrid park Plaza hotel is one of the more
recent large buildings in Antwerp. Although
intended to be a really modern building by
now it already looks a bit outdated.
The architecture reflects the magnificent
central station on the other side of the square.
Another thing is , despite of its recent date of
building it has been reconstructed a couple
of times.
Last year 'aquatopia' opened. A huge
aquarium complex in the left wing of the
hotel. (see my must see activities)
Also the front on the street site has been
rebuild to make it a more attractive cafe-
restaurant. I don't like that one. The few times
I've been there the service was like really
poor. They even ones managed to bring me
a COLD coffee. (And other people where
leaving one by one).
'Venus Williams' picked this hotel
when she visits Antwerp for shopping and to
try to win that Diamond tennis racquet. You'll
have to win the tournament three times in 5
years. One to go Venus.
Unique Quality: Very popular with the 'Antwerpenaars'
is the sunday morning brunch. The price is
above 30 euros but worth the money. Quit
abundant. A large choise for breakfast and
then moving on to a large choise of warm
dishes. ;-)
(one problem , they sometimes forget to note
down the reservation , it all turned out fine in
the end and they offered a free bottle of
champagne.)
The best thing about this hotel is it's location.
Public transport drives under the hotel (tram
3 brings you to the 'groenplaats' and that is
also near the 'grote markt') , the diamond
museum is located on this square , as well
as the zoo. Some fine (not excellent)
restaurants are just round the corner and a
huge cinema if you get bored in the evening.
(which I can't imagine in Antwerp). And of
course the central station where trains bring
you in less then an hour to Brussels a couple
of times an hour or to wherever you might like
to go. ;-)

At the Zoo and Central Station
I found this hotel the night before looking at Last Minutes offers. The term Park is somewhat confusing, because the hotel is located opposite the Central Station. Parking is available in the the basement (via the sidestreet at the right; East-side).
Unique Quality: Cheap breakfast and food shops are at the square in front of the station.
From the upper floors you have a splendid view over the city.
