One evening in Antwerp

by Bhuwan

I am in Antwerp in the first week of May. Staying near Antwerpen Centraal Station. Any ideas VTs for the evening?

Re: One evening in Antwerp

sorry thought I had replied on it but I must have hit the "cancel" button instead of the Post Answer.
I would recoment you would visit the old city center and have a walk and a drink... if the weather permits and see the sun go down at the river.
I don't really know what kind of things you like to do, so it is a bit difficult to give advice.
Since it is only evenings, there are no musea open.
If it is not yet too late, you might take a look at the university city campus, entrance Prinsstraat 13 and have a look in the beguinage (what is left of it)
or make a walk to the new marina at Het Eilandje...
it all depends what your likes are.

Travel Tips for Antwerp

MARKET SQUARE

by Helga67

The Market Square is a beautiful square with an impressive city hall and guild houses with stepped gables and gilt statues. You think, you're back in the 16th and 17th century when walking over this square.
Today's Market Square is still a lively centre with many pubs and restaurants and the statue of the legendary Brabo in the middle.

HISTORY OF ANTWERP

by LoriPori

Antwerp is a very old city and has seen many wars. It has been partly destroyed many times, but each time its people have rebuilt it.
When Napoleon, the great French general and emperor, conquered Antwerp in 1803, he found it completely deserted. The people had fled from their homes to escape from the French soldiers.
In 1914, at the beginning of World War I, the Germans attacked Antwerp. There were great rings of forts to protect the city, but they were destroyed by German guns. Again many of the people fled to the neighbouring country of Holland, but they later came back to fight and win.
In World War II Antwerp was again taken by the Germans and was freed by the victorious British and American troops.

Update: "By the way, the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division, took part in the liberation of Antwerp (September 1944)."

Thank you Eddy (Breughel) for pointing this out to me. I somehow failed to include my own country as participants in the liberation of Antwerp. Quelle une faux-pas!!

Time for some gossip

by belgianchocolate

Altough when Rubens was alive they didn't
had the 'sun' or paparazzi...But Rubens
himself made a remarcable painting for his
own grave chapel.

The painting shows the madonna urrounded
by saints? (1634) Asumed is that madonna
has the physiognomy of Isabell Brant , baby
Jezus Frans Rubens , Maria Magdalena
looks like Helena Fourment , saint Joris
looks like PP rubens himself and one of the
bishops looks like bishop Jansenianus.

Now go and have a look at the Antwerp
history , who had a love affair with
who ...who's wife was...
and you'll find a juicy story

(look at my must see activities :
sint Jacobs church , Lange Nieuwstraat )

HILTON ANTWERP

by LoriPori

A Landmark all on its own, the HILTON ANTWERP is a very beautiful historical building. It used to be the department store "Grand Bazaar".
It is ideally located right on the Groenplaats, a block from the Cathedral and two blocks from the Grote Markt.

On the right of the front gate...

by Ronald_T

On the right of the front gate of the Cathedral of Our Lady, (http://www.dekathedraal.be) you find the statue of Appelmans. The nice thing on this statue is that there is one person too much. This is an animator, and sit there every day a week, as long I can remember. If he sits still you cannot see the difference of the others. It is an amazing sight to see. I do not write here about the Cathedral of Our Lady. You can read more of it in my “must see activities” or in the “Cathedral” travelogue… So, check out there please.
