Airport

by Edel100

Which airport is the closest to Lier?

Re: Airport

by irisbe

Antwerp airport at Deurne
but even if you would come from Brussels, public transport is easy.
Antwerp airport is only small one, not all flights land there.
if you arrive in Zaventem in Brussels you can take a transfer bus to Antwerp or you can take a train. From there you can have connection by bus or train to Lier (train is fastest).

Wardje

by tompt

Lier has some popular figures, Wardje is one of them. Although he is known as Wardje from the Jezuits, he was not a clergyman. But he was more catholic than every pastor you could find. He earned his money as helping priest in Antwerpen, and later he became a Jezuit in Lier.
Wardje was a great danser, and he loved it. At the end of his live he had troubles walking but nevertheless he sold recordbraking numbers of almanacs and memberships of the Brothehood of Sint-Gummarus.

Sheepheads

by tompt

People from Lier have the nickname Sheepheads. The story behind this is the following:
There were two competing cities: Leuven and Lier. In 1425 duke Jan IV of Brabant offered the right to hold one university and one market. Lier had the first choice and instead of choosing the university it choose the sheepmarket. Leuven became a university city and people from Lier had to live with the nickname sheepheads......

There are some statues of sheep in the city but we liked this sheep over the door of a shop better.

Saint Gummarus church

by Helga67

What I especially liked about the interior of the Saint Gummarus church was the sun pouring through the many beautiful stained glass windows and giving a special effect of dark and light. Don't miss it on a sunny day.
