Pure Sauna Bed and Breakfast
Mechelsesteenweg 380/5, Lier, 2500, Belgium
We stayed at this B&B which was 5 minutes out of town. I chose it on the booking.com write up and 8.3 rating.
This B&B was too clinical for our taste. It is located in what looks like a tin shed. Inside it's all new and clean. Our room was spotless but we did not feel welcome. The staff were hoiteytoitey and could not present a genuine smile.
On the whole, the bed was very comfortable and breakfast was good....but I would not recommend B&B Pure on the basis that it was not a genuine B&B and that it seemed more like a hotel to stay in for a 'quicky' after working out at the gym or nightclub next door!!

Greetings to Lier
My question is, are there any hostels in Lier, cheap hotels for young people?
RE: Greetings to Lier
I found no hostels at Lier, only hotels, see:
I hope irisbe will supply some inside tip.
RE: Greetings to Lier
No, there aren't any hostels in Lier - the ones closest by are Nijlen, Mechelen and Antwerp.
If you check out my Lier travelpages you can find all the adresses for b&b there, and also two hotels.
If you have questions, just ask. It's my hometown so plenty of inside information :)
so to think, it's time that I update my Lier travelpage.... sooo much so tell

RE: RE: Greetings to Lier
Lier is absolutely beautiful and from Antwerp there are practicle every 10 minutes trains going and arriving.
So you can easily stay in Antwerp and make a daytrip to Lier.
Depending on when you might even consider do the combination and buy a train+rent a bicycle ticket.
The only thing that is a bit a pity is that you cannot visit all the places if you are not with a city guide.
Nicest time is in Spring or Summer when the bridges are decorated with flowers.
On Sunday morning you have the pigeon markets, very unique but slowly disappearing because the sport of pigeon competitions is not so popular in Belgium anymore amongst the young ones.
Don't miss the Zimmertower and the Opsomer Museum.
Take a walk through the Beguinage and maybe see the local painter at work. When the weather is nice he has his window open and make a little chit chat with you.
and don;t miss trying out the local pasteries.
Here are some albums of past visits:
and don't forget to visit the pages about Lier on VT.
I think you made a good choice to visit this little unknown city :)
Travel Tips for Lier
Lier is ankered in my soul
I was born and raised in Lier and actually I like everything about it.
From the interessting architecture of the St Gummaruskerk, our town hall or beguinage to the green surrounding of the Vesten and the (always) nearby water of the 3 rivers.
If you visit Lier...
* make a site-seeing tour by foot to see the Grote Markt, Zimmerplein, beguinage, St Gummaruskerk
* enjoy a pint of Caves on the terraces of the Zimmerplein
* hire a bike and follow the riverbanks to see Lier at his best
* make a tour by foot over the Vesten
* buy some 'Lierse Vlaaikens' in a bakery
The best spot to be after a hike or a trip!
Lier is a little small city East-South to Antwerp. It lends itself perfect for walks, cycling tours, even boat tours!
But after all those efforts, one deserves a refreshing drink!
An excellent place is this recently renewed Zimmerplaats with huge terraces in the sun.
Cheers! It is small, nice, not too crowded.
An excellent place to spend an early morning or an afternoon.
Beautiful Flemish architecture
Lier is a charming town with a lot of beautiful houses. The most of these old houses can be found around the Grote Markt and near the Lesser Nete that goes straight through the city. Just walk around and you can't miss them.
This very old chapel dates from when the Spanish were here.
They came to conquer us and beat out the Protestants out of Lier.
In Lier there was quite some resistant from the Geuzen and the city got severely punished for it. Many ppl got killed by the Spanish.
Afterwards they build this chapel and it is one of the stops you have to pass by when you go to Santiago de Compostela for pelgrimage.
Saint Gumarus church
This is a picture of the Saint Gumarus church in Lier.
It is a very nice and historical church you can visit (if you pay admission).
It has the most beautiful and biggest organs in Belgium and I once had the honour to be up there to hear and see the young organist playing.
But that was not what I was intending to explain here.
I wanted to tell you about the tower. The tower you see here in the first picture is namely not the tower of the church! It is the city tower and thus belongs to the city.
The spire of the church you can see on the second picture and it is much smaller.
The city tower is said to have been originally 2 meters higher then Our Ladies Cathedral in Antwerp (really???) making it the biggest tower but... it got hit several times by lightening and caught fire turn on turn. The people of Lier got tired of it and made the tower shorter again and the pointing spire got replaced by a rounded one.
People say it looks like a pepperbus and that is how it is called De Peperbus.
