Activities for kids in Mechelen

by rlg2706

Can anyone help with this one? I am going to be spending a weekend in Mechelen, Belgium. I am meeting a friend from the continent and her family there. Our kids will be meeting for the first time and I need to find somewhere to meet where there will be lots for the children to do, where they can be active and can play together (there will be a language barrier. So hands on activities or adventure playgrounds or a big park to play sports, where they don't necessarily have to be able to speak to each other to play. There will be four boys aged between 6 and 9 and a 12 year old girl. My 12 year old will probably hang out with the adults so activities for lively boys please!!!!!
Thank you for any help....

www.technopolis.be
Kids can do all kind of experiments, I visited last year with my niece (7) and nephew (9) and they had lots of fun

Another nice place (and outside) is http://www.plankendael.be/ (but you need good weather)

Have fun !

Thank you, I looked at the technopolis website and it looks great. It's just the sort of place I needed to find out about! I think we will also visit the zoo on our own if the weather is nice, the next day.
Thank you again,
Rachel

Travel Tips for Mechelen

Tourist centre & guides

by toonsarah

The tourist information service for Mechelen is called In & Uit Mechelen. They have an office in the south east corner of the Grote Markt (near the statue of Op-Signoorke outside the Town Hall). This is the place to come for information about tourist sights, theatre and dance performances (and tickets for these), hotel reservations, city walks and guides. We did one of the guided city walks on offer, the “Three Burgundian generations”. This is the classic Mechelen highlights tour, which focuses on the most important historic buildings, most of them dating from the medieval and Renaissance periods. It offers an opportunity to go inside the Town Hall to see the great reception hall and the wonderful Battle of Tunis tapestry (see my Local Customs tip for more on this). We also visited the palaces of Margaret of Austria and Margaret of York, the Cathedral, the Hof von Busleyden and walked through some of the most interesting of Mechelen’s back streets. Our guide was knowledgeable and helpful, e.g. in adapting the tour to respond to some specific questions we’d asked. This walk costs € 5 and there’s no need to book – you just need to turn up at the desk of In & Uit Mechelen 15 minutes before the start of the tour to get your ticket. Walks are conducted daily during the Easter holidays and throughout July and August at 14.00, and on weekends and public holidays from Easter until mid September at the same time. Other tours available include a climb of the cathedral tower to see the views and the carillon – check the website below for details of this and other possibilities.

The tourist centre itself is open as follows:
1st October – 31st March, Monday – Friday 9.30-16.30 and Saturday – Sunday (and public holidays) 10.30-15.30
1st April – 30th September, Monday 9.30-19.00, Tuesday – Friday 9.30-17.30, Saturday – Sunday (and public holidays) 10.00-16.30

Mechelse koekoek.

by belgianchocolate

Mechelse koekoek

Koekoek literally translated means cuckoo.
You know , that european bird known for laying his egs in other birds nest and letting them do all the work. Well this 'mechelse koekoek' has got nothing to do with this bird except for its color.

It's a chicken with striped white , grey colored feathers. A beautifull animal that can weight up to 5 kilo for a cock. http://www.mechelsekoekoek.dyns.cx/

Have a look at the website....
They also became a local delicasy and how weird it might sound...that was also what saved them because they where almost extinct.

Cathedral interior

by bugulma

Mechelen is a seat for Belgian Archbishops and the cathedral is very rich in interior inside. Here is kept the big collection of church adornments as well. Some pictures of the Cathedral interior you can enjoy in the travelogue.

Haverwerf

by bugulma

A group of the medieval houses, called Haverwerf, is situated in Haverwerf quay. All houses have own names. From left to right: St Joseph, The Little Devil and The Little Eden. Houses built in XVI-XVII century and were place where ships paid taxes when they transported salt, fish or oats along Djile River.

Huis De Beyaert

by bugulma

City house De Bayaert is situated in the western part of Grote Markt, the central square of the city. It was originally a hospice for pilgrims but in the beginning of XVI century it became city hall. Nowadays the central post office is in the building.
