Hello, the easiest way to go to (the biggest chocolate factory in the world) Barry Callebaut in Wieze is to take bus "9 S" in direction of Sint-Niklaas at the railway station in Aalst. The bus goes about each 30 minutes between 6h15 and 9h30,later it goes about each hour. The bus ride should take less than 15 minutes

Aalst is known all over Belgium for its carnaval traditions. There are several parades with the most famous one on tuesday: "Voil Jeanettenstoet", men overdressed as women. We haven't been here during carnaval, but you can see evidence of the tradition all over Aalst. On the Hopmarkt there even is a carnaval monument in honr of the Voil Jeanetten.
I went back to the city around 6:30pm. This photo is about the last part of the parade, The parade is 6 hours long yearly. The last part are those the most beautiful teams, all in all with music, lights dancers, so it's really entertaining.
Coming from the graveyard take a left turn, it is not really a road but a path following the walls of the graveyard. Follow the path, enjoy the green view over meadows, untill you reach the Jobstraat. Go left again. Not much further there is a small white church surrounded by trees. It is located on the corner of the St Jobstraat and Frans Roucelstraat. At the back of the church there is a small artificial cave with a scene of the crucifiction of Christ. Inside the church is sober, but worth to see nevertheless.
Like many belgian cities Aalst also has a beguinage. But it doesn't look very authentic anymore. It was founded in 1261, by a whealthy citizen of Aalst.
After the first worlde war the number beguinges dropped until there were none left after the second world war. The small white houses they used to live in are since then replaced by social housing. Only the convent, church and a small chapel are remaining.
The St. Katherinachurch was built in 1787 and replaced the old beguinage church. The building style is monumental and cool, not like you would expect from a church on a beguinage.
The little chapel in honor of St. Antonius of Padua, is in neobaraque style and was built over the grave of beguine Johanna Dedemaecker. Johanna was a beguine who lived in the beguinage of Aalst. She died in 1631 of the plague. Not much later miracles started to happen on her grave. Don't know what kind of miracles, but we were there and nothing happened....
