More about Ghent Marriott Hotel
Excellent hotel
by TripAdvisor Member thomas199023
We stayed at the Marriott last easter weekend. We stayed for 3 nights there. I choose the hotel after reading the reviews on this website, and I wasnt let down.
When we arrived we were greeted by the congierge, he was extremly friendly and looked teh whole weekend after us, he remembert us and every time he saw us he asked if everything was well.
Checkin went fast, and though we booked threw a travel website, we still got the marriott reward points.
The rooms were excellent they had everything you would expect from a large chain hotel. I've stayed in a lot of high class hotels over the last couple of year's and the marriott ghent has one of the best rooms I have ever slept in. It was also extremly clean, there was absolutly no hair left in the bathroom. I have attached some photo's of the room. the only thing I did'nt like was the Marriott bedding (availably in every marriott) it's nothing simular to Westins heavanly bed or a sheraton sweetsleeper, but thats personal.
The lobby of the hotel is very beautiful, and after a day in Ghent you can relax thereand have a drink or a small bite to eat. Every day around 4pm there was a piano player, and singer.
Breakfast was also very well, there was plenty of everything and it was of a high quality, though if breakfast is'nt includit in your rate, it is'nt worth 20 euros. If so I would suggest to go to a local bistro of witch there are lots.
We ate at the restaurant once, the quality was well but nothing special and for the price we payed it was very expencive, 140 euros for a dinner for 3 persons, witch is quite expensive.
Right across the hotel there is a much better restaurant called "De Witte Leeuw" We ate there the two nights after and it costs about 85 euros for 3 people. I would suggest to have the Ham, witch was really good. the service was also very well.
I would also suggest to go to a bar called "De Dulle Grieth" I read it in one of teh reviews on this website and decided to go there and it was absolutly great. they have over 250 beers from all over the world, they also have a beer called "the Max" witch is a glass of about 1,2 liters ( photo included) when you order one the barman will ask you for your shoo and it is put in a basked and you wont get it back until you've drinkt it all. Just ask the congierge of the Marriott for directions.
When I'm in Ghent the next time I will definatly stay at he Marriott again.
What a gem--totally memorable

We drove into Ghent and the outskirts felt like the Bronx (gritty, dirty). We were wondering if we made a mistake by including it in our itinerary. However, when we drove into the parking garage under the hotel... and then entered the hotel lobby by the elevator, we were pleasantly surprised. But then, when we walked out unto the canal, we nearly cried with DELIGHT! I have traveled a LOT and this was perhaps the most perfectly placed hotel I've ever stayed in. Our room was beautiful... with the most amazing view of the canal and towers--like a dream come true. I honestly did NOT want to go to sleep because I wanted to enjoy the view. The breakfast, which was included, was the best we've ever had in Europe (for a free meal). I would stay here a million times over.
Hotel not worth of the name Marriott
by TripAdvisor Member HildeVH
For this price per night you would expect an upstanding hotel. Though the rooms were freezing cold and could not be controlled by the guest. The room view was to the neighbour accross the smaal street were I could shake hands with. No mouth water. The restaurant took ages to get your food and they even forgot a person when serving. And safety is NOT AT ALL guaranteed at this hotel. I got my car damaged while I thought it was safely parked in the garage.
Please take a good advice choose an other hotel!!!!
Great new hotel in Ghent

We stayed in the hotel for one night during a weekend. Staff was very friendly. Rooms were clean and modern. Lobby is beautiful and the bar is small, but trendy. Breakfast was fantastic, lots of choice. If you take a table at the window you have a nice view over the river. The location of the hotel is perfect! All main atrractions within walking distance. There is also a parking garage below the hotel.
I would definitely recommend this to people travelling for both business and leisure.
Excellent hotel, great rooms

This is probably the best place to stay in Gent. Do choose a room with a view on the water and the old town. We had room 229 which had 5 windows: splendid view, good airco (although the air was a bit dry at night and you can not open a window).
Great breakfast. The 'Korenhuis' restaurant offers a superbe dinner for 45 euro. Nice staff. We took the 'dinner package' which was 299 euro for a luxury room and dinner for 2 which is very reasonable for a 5 star hotel.
We should certainly recommend this hotel.
Best hotel in Ghent

This hotel is completely modern, but set behind a historic facade on the loveliest canal/river in Ghent. The boat trips start right outside the hotel.
The room is lovely - we had room 129 which overlooks the water & the historic houses / church / bridges opposite - all lit up at night.
The breakfast is nice - a hot / cold buffet but with nothing freshly made (a slight disappointment as I had expected waffles), but still very good, with excellent cheeses, fresh fruit salad etc.
The staff are superb, and speak flawless english. My husband got ill (probably from the appalling weather this weekend) & they knew where to send us for a doctor on a Bank Holiday when everything was closed.
The parking under the hotel is easy to find, and actually very big - lots of room, and convenient.
I would always stay in this hotel if we return to Ghent (which is a very pretty city).
Great hotel in Ghent

We spent 3 days at the Marriott and thoroughly enjoyed it.
The hotel is in a great location - the rear entrance is just a 5 minute walk from the main square (Korenmarkt). We took tram #1 from central station (Sint-Pieters Station) to the square and walked to the hotel. (Note that you can buy tram tickets from the driver on the tram, but they are cheaper if buy them from the machine beforehand.)
We also really enjoyed the breakfast, which included fresh juices and breads, muesli, yoghurt and fresh cheeses. There were also hot trays with eggs, potatoes and meats, but we didn't try those. And while there were no freshly made waffles, they did have waffles that were delicious. We were able to have breakfast in the restaurant, which was beautiful, and had a wonderful view of the canal - but I'm not sure if this is because we always had a later breakfast.
I agree with all the reviews that the staff were excellent. Everyone was friendly, helpful and the service was always prompt.
As mentioned, the hotel lobby is beautiful, since one side of the hotel is all glass. For a rainy weekend, it was a great place to relax with a snack or drink.
The location of the hotel was fantastic as we were able to walk most everywhere, and it's within walking distance of lots of great restaurants. There's also a great Vietnamese restaurant right across the street (from the front of the hotel).
The room itself was perfectly clean and very comfortable. We'll definitely stay here again if we return to Ghent.
Great hotel !

We stayed here one night for celebrating my birthday. And we loved this place !
First of all : location. Couldn't be better > right in the middle of central Ghent, next to a river and in the middle of much 'medieval' scenery and architecture.
Hotel itself opened in march 07 and the renovation investment must have been huge ! Rooms itself are in a more modern section of the hotel, spread over five floors. The hallways of all 5 floors look out over a spacious lobby on the ground floor and to a very large glass wall, which makes you very much part of the cities scenery and gives lots of light. The lobby on ground level is a cozy place.
Restaurant and breakfast area are in a more historical part of the hotel, also beautifully renovated and with views over the bordering river. The view makes you forget about Bruges, this other medieval city that you might have visited the day before.
Rooms itself are very 'Marriott' : well designed, quality furnishing, practical and pampering... If I had one negative thing to say in this review, then it is that room and bathroom are quite 'compact'... having a bathroom, king bed and 2 one-seaters is great but a lot on a 22 square meter surface (more or less). Didn't bother us too much though.
Service is very friendly and professional : young people, enthusiastic and trying to do a good job and.. they succeed !
We booked via hotel's website, paid 159 euro and this was great value, especially considering all the included benefits such as breakfast for 2, a boat trip through Ghent, two tickets for the design museum and.... a beer and tapas for 2 as well. Nice !
Don't waste your time looking for another hotel, this is the best !

Very new and modern hotel with the traditional Marriott Quality. We were very impressed by all the staff who, without exception, were extremely kind with a great customer focus, proactive in their service attitude.
The Hotel is very well located and the rooms are big with nice beds and pillows. The main restaurant is immaculate, with great decor and superb staff. We had a great time here!...unfortunately we couldn't stay longer

Bars, Restaurants from 1970s
by chalkie247
My grandfather has expressed an interest in going back to Gent where he lived in the mid 1970s and was wondering if anyone knew of any bars, restaurants, hotels etc that are still open from back then??
Thanks!
Re: Bars, Restaurants from 1970s

From more then 300 cafés (bars) there should be some that are there sinds 1970s... A list is on http://www.cafeplan.be/vlaanderen/search.php?display=GENT&list=1
The more interessting ones:
DULLE GRIET
CAFÉ DEN TURK
'T GALGENHUISJE (since 1776)
DAMBERD (before 1500)
WATERHUIS AAN DE BIERKANT
The same is valid for the restaurants (more then 400 on http://www.resto.be). Maybe "De Witte Leeuw" which is located near the "best view of town" still rings a bell.
