A different experience

My experience of the Gravensteen was quite different. We had booked for Dec 31st as the Hotel offered a great rate for that night of only 69.50€ considering it was New Year.

In the end due bad weather earlier in our journey we decided to arrive in Gent 1 day early and checked at the Gravensteen to see if they has a room for the night of the 30th as well. The guy on reception confirmed they did and even offered to match the booked rate as well (about 40% of the rack rate. So we had two nights for less than the other guy paid for one (he was robbed).
The room was more than adequate, clean, reasonably sized and if anything a little too warm, but that was OK by us as there was snow falling at the time.
We were in the annex which meant a slushy walk to and from the main hotel, but no great problem. There was free broadband available in the lounge (one machine, first come first served) and some of the friendliest staff we has ever met in any hotel anywhere.

On top of that Gent was magically blanketed with snow.

Unique Quality: Great breakfast, wonderful staff

Really bad choice of hotel

Gravensteen is an overpriced low quality hotel, with a beautiful front, but the rooms behind this facade are crampy, dirty, noisy and too expensive. We paid 145 euro per night and we got a small room with a bathroom that was full of mold, pubic hair and a shower that doubled as a bath, because the water would not run down. For this amount money we expect something much better.

Great Central Location

Spacious rooms with private baths for about 130 Euros a night. Located just a few steps from the Gravensteen castle, the hotel has a great location. Many cafes and restaurants in the neighborhood. Also conveniently located to a tram stop.

Q: Arriving Gent Sint Pieters with medium suitcase "Will we be able to get on a Tram to go to the City Centre with a medium sized suitcase? or should we get a taxi to the hotel -..."

A: "You shouldn't have any problem with the tram. They run regularly and are rarely full except at peak times. Gent taxis are expensive."
