Statues!!!
by irisbe
Leuven is so wellknown for its statues!
Once they stood upon a stone, out of reach, nowadays they stand in the middle of streets and squares where you actualy can touch them.
Every statue has its history and meaning.
I have gathered a few already for you. De Ballon van vriendschap
The Balloon of friendship
offered by the 40 year olds at the time of inauguration.
You can find it next to the university building.
Sculpture Trail III...

This statue stands near the town hall. Leuven is a university city, and this sculpture represents learning, the youth is pouring knowledge into his head. BUT, it's also a brewing city, and we all know students, so maybe he's pouring beer into his head? I know which was more true of me in my student days ;-)
The beer

Louvain is the 'hometown' of the beerbrewer, Interbrew, who owns brewerys all over the world. Nowadays 1 in 5 beers is Interbrew's. So its not for nothing that the people in Leuven drink lots of beer. The old market is thé place where students come in the evenings to drink a beer and talk a bit with their friends, but of course the're many more cafés than just those on the ol market! The're plentry of them...
The story of Fiere Margriet
by marc56
The story of Fiere Margriet is the story of a young girl, who was been wraped and murderd.
After she was murdered, the bandits throw her body in the water.
But the body doesn't sink, and float on the surface.
But not only the body kept floating, it als floated against the water.
The chapel of Fiere Margriet can be seen in the Sint-Pieterschurch.
Umbrella!

I went to Bruges with a friend from Chili. Apperently they are not used to fast changing weather overthere. We had rain, sunshine, snow, some more sun, storm and again sun all in one day. My friend, who had never felt snow, went completely nuts and thought the apocalyps was near. The belgian wheather can be very unpredictable. Belgian wheather reports are notoriously inaccurate (we only have a small army).
