New Years Eve in Brugge

by AgentBrittany83

I'll be in Brugge on New Years Eve this year. What sort of festivities take place on that night? Any big parties or fireworks or anything? Thanks in advance!

There will be certainly parties and fireworks. Also a christmas market and an outside ice-rink will still be there on New Years Eve.But it is a bit early to find any details on the internet yet. Summer is still to come !

I do not know of any special or specific activites (check the Brugge calendar on the city's website). However, like in all major towns in Belgium, Brugge offers a variety of Christmas season's activities. Christmas markets or fairs, open air skating, adapted tours, Ice sculpture exhibition etc.

Belgians will also spend time at the seaside to celebrate the New Year. Here too (the seaside is only a whisk away from Bruges), you wille find a variety of activities like New year's eve corrida's, fireworks, bonfires etc

Early January Oostende has an annual New Year's dip in the North sea; you don't have to participate, but cheering on is also tintillating...

Plenty to do and enjoy...

Travel Tips for Brugge

Friendly people, great food loads to see and do

by Nicky77

I loved the Churches and historic buildings in Bruges. Take time to go inside and really get a feel for them. The views from the Belfry were spectacular but be warned, there are a lot of stairs to climb and the staircase is very narrow and winding. Not for the claustrophobic! Howvever, it is well worth the effort and we treated ourselves with a waffle and coffee when we came back down.....!
Also look in the little streets off of the Markt Square for some lovely, reasonably priced restaurants. The friendly people and the picturesque cobbled streets and beautiful buildings I went in the winter where every stop in a cafe was for a warming coffee or hot chocolate, I'm going back in the summer when , no doubt the refreshments will be colder and more alcoholic!

Het Minnewater in Brugge

by hvdvoorde

Procession of the Holy Blood

by Mahieu

Every year on Ascension Day, the historic city of Bruges attracts thousands of visitors to one of the great religious processions of Europe, the Holy Blood Procession. During this procession the relic of the Holy Blood (see must see tips), is carried through the medieval streets of Bruges. Half the parade is representing scenes from the old and New Testament interpreted by guild, trades, brotherhoods and chambers of rhetoric from the burgundain period. The second part of the procession is devoted to the relic of the blood of Jesus brought to Bruges by Derrick of Alsace, Count of Flanders after the second crusade in 1150.

Walking shoes, warm clothes, umbrella.

by hobanma

Be prepared to do lots of walking. I was there in May and it was cool, damp, and very very windy. Plan on layering and be sure to have something for rain - a jacket or umbrella. Take lots of film or have plenty of memory for your digital camera.
