closing time+smoking

by brigittex

hi, what is closing time in bruges restaurants and bars?
is smoking allowed or not?
thank you

Re: closing time+smoking

by unaS

I was in Brugge/Bruges in April last year. Most of the restaurants closed earlyish - before 2000. First night I wasn't aware of that and had to eat in a really expensive place.

I am a smoker. Ate only out-of-doors. All restaurants have covered, heated patios.
Even on a rainy day I was warm and dry :)

Full details on my Bruges/Brugge page.

Have fun!

Normaly in Belgium they have diner in a restaurant about 19.OOh till 20.00h. So I dont understand that restaurants already close at 20.00h .
Only places with fast food close earlier.
Since about one year it is forbidden to smoke in a room where they serve food.
You have to go outside to smoke. It's also forbidden to smoke in all public areas(train, bank, post office..)
In some bars you can still smoke. They have a green sticker on the door.

I was there at the end of July, and the bars/restaurants were open much later than 20:00. I assumed they worked on 'normal' clsing times e.g.around 22:30/23:00 (but I was in bed by then).

No smoking inside anywhere that I ate/drank (or saw), as is the norm in most of Europe nowadays. If it's warm enough (or the heaters are good enough) just sit outside. Otherwise you'll have to keep nipping out for a cigarette, like everyone else has to! :-)

Travel Tips for Brugge

The Belfry

by globetrott

The Belfry is 84 meters high and dates back to the 13th century

The Belfry was a place to watch out for enemies and fire
and it was as well a way to demonstrate Brugges financial power and prosperity A place I would like to visit again

Minnewater

by Toyin

However, from the 19th century, it appeared far more alluring for tourist to call the Minnewater "the lake of love". It is indeed a very romantic setting.

The other side of Minnewateris dominated by the Poertoren, or Powder Tower.

Michelangelos masterpiece

by globetrott

The most important sight in this church is a small marble-madonna " the mother with her child " made by Michelangelo
It is in the centre of a small side-altar, and you might easily over-see it.
But it was mentioned in my guide-book, so I was prepared.

Tipping & Etiquette

by Fen

In a country where service is included in most bills, tipping is not a problem. Most people will not expect a tip. Possible exceptions are public toilets, where the attendant may expect a tip of 25 cents or so, and porter and maid service in the more expensive hotels.

The citizens of Bruges and Ghent are open, friendly and patient. Most will say that they speak only a little English, then go on to speak it fluently. However do not assume that everyone will speak English.
