Bruges, Hotel De Goezeput

Best (5.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on October 12, 2014

A few months ago I visited Belgium for a few days following a trip to London. I was very interested in seeing Bruges. The Eurostar from London's St Pancras International Train Station to any city in Belgium was an affordable $77.00 one way. The trip to Bruges via Brussels was pleasant and speedy.
I had booked a room at The Hotel de Goezeput in Bruges. The hotel is in an 18th century building formerly a monastery and is located in the city’s historical center. Also, it is only about a half a mile from the central train station.
The Hotel Goezeput proved to be exactly what I wanted for my initial visit to what I discovered is an enchanting little city.
My single room, for a reasonable € 70 per night, was at the top of very wide wooden staircase. It was a good size attractive room, clean and comfortable. It came with a private bathroom with shower and toilet. A large window provided ample fresh air and a pleasant view of the quiet neighborhood to the rear of the hotel.
Fresh towels were provided on a regular basis.
All rooms at The Goezeput come with wireless Internet and a TV.
The complimentary buffet breakfast was one of the better I've enjoyed. It came with a variety of juices, a wide assortment of breads and croissants, meats and cheeses, yogurt, cereals, coffee and tea. It was an enjoyable start to the day.
The Reception Desk and a pleasant bar area are off the front entrance and to the front of the breakfast room. The receptionist - as well as the rest of the hotel staff - was extremely courteous and helpful.
A short walk from the Hotel de Goezeput, one goes through a pleasant network of medieval cobblestone streets to and through the two Main Squares of Bruges, the Grote Markt or Market Square (Grand'Place) and the Burg, the administrative heart of Bruges. These two squares are almoct side by side and each has some of the city's most attractive and historic buildings.
On the walk from the Hotel De Goezeput, one passes one interesting and colorful building after another, some large, some not so large but almost all of them with unique architectural features.
In the opposite direction from the Hotel de Goezeput, a short walk down Goezeputstraat, stands the impressive Gothic Church of Our Lady of Bruges which dates from the 13th through 15th centuries. One striking feature of this massive medieval church is the 401 ft. brick steeple which is clearly visible a good distance from the hotel.
It is the tallest steeple in Bruges and the second tallest brickwork tower in the world. The church's most celebrated art treasure is Michelangelo's "The Madonna of Bruges", a white marble sculpture of the Madonna and Child created around 1504. This is said to be the only one of this masters sculptures to leave Italy during Michelangelo's lifetime.
Bruges has several museums of interest and numerous small parks as well as its canals and all are in comfortable walking distance.
If one has tired of walking, there are other comfortable ways to see Bruges. A boat ride through the canals gives the visitor a pleasant and different view of Bruges. Horse drawn carriages are also available for hire.

Unique Quality: Located in the city’s historical center. Easily accessible being only about a half a mile from the central train station.

Directions: Historical district.
