beautiful hotel
by A TripAdvisor Member
After much reading of previous reviews on several hotels I picked this one for a girlie night in Bruges with my daughter. The hotel was beautiful, and room lovely with a high ceiling and good furnishings. It was in a good central location - and despite the youth hostel opposite we were not disturbed by their noise.
However I am not a smoker and made the mistake of not asking for a no smoking room ( not sure if these exist here) - the room smelt really badly - and despite leaving the window open for 3 hours whilst we went out to dinner - it was still quite overwhelming on our return. I had stingy eyes and still felt overwhelmed by the smell the next morning.
If I had stayed longer I would have asked to be moved. A shame that so much of Eurpoe smokes so heavily, as it is also a problem in all restaurants as well.
Breakfast was good - a beautifully light and airy breakfast room - with a simple but adequate range and quality of food.
I would love to stay in the hotel again but would specify I am a non smoker!
Great all round

Brilliant hotel with great facilities and a warm homely feel to it. The staff were very accomodating - allowing me to park my motorcycle in their secure parking area and having a early check-in (It is normally 3pm).
The room was large and spacious despite the beams which added to character to the room, was located on the top floor.
Breakfast was included and was excellent and the room had all the amenities including coffee making facilties and multi language international television - for those who might miss some of their home comforts (no need to miss that episode of 'Eastenders' when staying here!).
As for location the hotel is located within the walled part of the city only a couple of minutes walk from the Burg and Markt squares and was easy to find. Brugge is a delightful place to visit and is easily managable by foot.
Overall a very enjoyable experience and I would be happy to stay here again.
Check out the website for some special offers as I booked this only the night before and managed to get a special offer for €95 including tax for a single night stay with single occupancy!
Just like they say....

This really was a charming and stylish hotel. I could have sworn, for the first day, that we were the only people staying there - until I saw another 20 or so people at breakfast. It's so quiet and private you can get "other wordly" ! It's a thoughtfully refurbished old house, still minimalist enough to be kept spotlessly clean yet with lots of charm in the right places. Yes, it's all true, breakfasts were a great mix of cereal, fruit, ham, cheese, more ham, more fruit, toast, more ham, cheese and then back to bed to sleep it off if you have time!
In summary ... stylish but not snotty. If you are young and think you'll get bored there's a swingin' youth hostel bar across the road - just enough of a staggering distance to keep it at arms length from those of us who sleep after midnight. The only thing I didn't like at first was the picture in the bathroom til my boyfriend pointed out it was a neat little magnifying mirror! All those touches take the Oud Huis to top league. And October was a great time to be there as it was the first quiet week after summer.

Wonderful Hotel
by A TripAdvisor Member
A great hotel in a wonderful city. Our room was a nice size and very comfortable and quiet. We did have to walk through the garage to get to our room (the garage was packed with cars and we had big bags so it was hard to maneuver). We were in an annex or something to the main hotel...Maybe because of our non-smoking request. The hotel is very modern compared to most European hotels. It is very close to the center of things so there was no problem walking to all the sites and shops.

I spent two nights at the hotel and found it delightful-- great room with great overall atmosphere. While it has an old style, the fact that it is a new hotel means that it is very up to date. The only comment I would make is that it is very short staffed at night which seemed odd-- desk staff also opened the bar. I would however really recommend this hotel
Impersonal but good quality

We spent 2 nights here at the end of October. The hotel is well appointed and very central. As it has been converted from a couple of older properties means it has charm and our room had clearly been redone recently. Although at the front (directly opposite the infamous youth hostel) the double glazing is excellent and there was minimal noise from the bar or the road. The guest areas of the hotel were extremely well decorated and there is a huge breakfast room (to accommodate the huge breakfast!). We were impressed with the variety, freshness and quantity of the food on offer (including fresh fruit salad). Two aspects of the hotel were disappointing: we asked for recommendations for dinner and were directed to 2 unappealing and expensive restaurants; we were never offered help with any luggage (no porter in evidence) and no-one appeared to monitor the luggage room (for those like us who don't like to pay for a late check-out).
Lovely building but mixed impression.

Lovely building but mixed impression.Dressed for Christmas and candles glowing at reception but not enough to dispel the chill of our arrival. We chose this hotel because it states "parking"but we were given a very curt "car park only holds 5 cars and its full" greeting and directed to the nearest municipal car park. Room was spacious but W.C. not cleaned well since previous guest(!) and air conditioning wasn't working. Attractive breakfast room and satifactory breakfast but we wouldn't return.
Bruges - A Great Place To Stay
by TripAdvisor Member Amymaria
My husband and I stayed for 2 nights at this hotel in Bruges just before Christmas. The hotel made a good first impression and we were pleased with our room although rather disappointed that it was in the annexe of the hotel. We were, however, not surprised by this as we had asked for a non-smoking room and suspected we might not, therefore, get a room in the main part of the hotel. We had a lovely bathroom and the bed was comfortable. Great breakfast to set us up for the day - included in the price of our holiday. We would have rated the stay as above average but for the fact that we found the cleanliness not up to scratch. We found a sock on the floor behind the curtain - not one of ours and seemed like it had been there a while! Further investigation led to the discovery of a very old and dried up lump of chocolate in a corner behind the bed. Bathroom was spotlessly clean however. We loved Bruges and would definitely go back. Everywhere we went the locals were welcoming and friendly. Service at all the places we ate was excellent - as was the food - and very friendly.
New Year stay
by TripAdvisor Member Lovetrip
My boyfriend and I stayed at the Oud Huis de Peelaert for 3 nights to avoid an over-crowded London at New Year. A fantastic decision. Great hotel, old-world glam but all immaculately refurbished. Our room was larger than expected with small seating area, large bathroom and separate WC and was in the main part of the hotel. Had no issues at all with cleanliness. Only meal that hotel serves is breakfast, but this is huge and there are loads of nice restaurants nearby. Found hotel staff really friendly and efficient. They checked us in in 5 seconds flat! Don't forget to take gym/swimwear as there is a great tiny gym, sauna and steamroom area in the basement. Again, beautifully refurbished in a cavernous cellar complete with loungers and classical music. Perfect after a long day's walking in Bruges.

best way to amsterdam
by lorenfizzard
We are going to brugge next week from brussels airport. We want to go to amsterdam by way of boat or bus. What is the best and most ecomonical means?
Re: best way to amsterdam

www.eurolines.com does not offer a bus service from Brugge to Amsterdam: you would need to go back to Brussels (or to Ghent).
You would do better to make the journey by train. Look at
http://www.b-rail.be/main/E/
for train times and fares. Journey takes 3+ hours.
The port for Brugge is Zeebrugge. I can find no ferries to Amsterdam leaving from there.

There are no boat services from Brugge to Amsterdam. Going by bus is not convenient. Train is the way to go. See www.nmbs.be

I agree, we investigated all the options a couple of years ago during an extended family holiday in Europe and the train was by far the best option.

The train from Brugge to Amsterdam goes via Antwerp (not Brussels).
Depending at which time you take the train, it's a 3 hr 45 minute - 4 hr trip.

Train, best way
Re: best way to amsterdam

As I noted, it's the Eurolines bus which goes from Brussels (or Ghent).
The train does indeed go via Antwerp.

tyains from brugge leave on the hour every hour to antwerp, change to opposite platform and antwerp to amsterdam train is 5 mins later! take about 3 and half hours but its easy cause if the train from brugge is late the 2nd train will wait at antwerp. its about $55euros return last year it was anyway!

I don't know if the transfer in Antwerp is on the same platform. Schedules changed this year, and the Brugge - Antwerpen direct train runs a different schedule now. This means that on weekdays you have about 20 minutes for your change, and on weekends even 40 minutes. Plenty of time to find your platform, and even have a look around, as the station really is magnificant.
