The Passage Hostel

The Passage is very central and easy to find, and has a very friendly owner that speaks, at the very least, half a dozen different languages fluently. It was amazing to watch the staff taking orders in the fantastic restaurant downstairs (not to be missed), switching between languages without even pausing for thought. They even managed to remember what the language each guest was speaking, without ever having to be reminded. The restaurant itself had great food at good prices, with a charm, ambience and eccentric chef that is hard to forget.

The hostel itself is clean, although a bit rough around the edges, but completely sanitary, with hot showers. The security is lacking, but the town itself is very safe, you only have to worry about your fellow travellers. Besides, the owner was very happy to look after my bags personally on the last day there, while I wandered around the town before my plane left. Bring your own locks, but don't worry about it too much.

The bar is very popular with locals and guests, but the hostel is not a party house. If you want a bigger, but rougher, place, with more opportunity to listen to loud music and hang with other travellers, while drinking excellent belgian beer, you will probably prefer the less centrally located Snuffel Sleep In. For, me, however, the Passage was perfect, and I could go and drink with other travellers in the Snuffel Bar anyway.

The Passage (I think)

Unique Quality: For a bit more money you can have the privacy of a double room, you don't get in a hostel dormitory. We got an attic room, with no elevator, but wonderful view over the rooftops, and you get breakfast in the bar on the groundfloor (see photo)

There is a hostel called The...

There is a hostel called The Passage Hostel. While they don't have private rooms the hotel next door does (Passage Hotel - same owner). The room I got ran approx. $45 US a night. The room was large and fairly basic w/double bed and sink. Bathroom (WC) one floor down and shower two floors down. Very colorful decor (my room was pinks and purples). You can't beat this central location. I walked right to it from the train station. It is very close to all the chic shopping, walking distance to all the fun pubs and outdoor bistros in the T'zand market. Also very close walk to the Grand Markt! The restaurant/bar was excellent and I had a wonderful time sitting and chatting with the owner about music most of one evening. I would highly recommend this location if not having a room ensuite or with WC very close by is a preferance for you. I can only speak personally for the hotel (directly next to hostel) and pub, not specifically the hostel though I have read high marks on it also. Hostel runs $9-$16 US per person per night. If looking for good info re; hostels in Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg try The Only Comprehensive, Unofficial, Opinionated Guide by Paul Karr and Martha Coombs. Very helpful info, good directions, tips and info on the best pubs or restaurants near hostel locations. :-D
$9-$16 for hostel, $45-$51 for private double room in Passage Hotel next to hostel.

Unique Quality: Location, location, location!
