are children allowed in bars/pubs in Bruges

by gazstrong

Hi

I will be spending a few days in Bruges with my infant son later this month and will be taking in all the sites.

However I am a lover of european (particularly Belgian) beer and would like to spend possibly an hour in a traditional Belgian beer house/pub and sample some local brew.

Is it possible to bring a young child (2 years old) into a bar in Bruges?

Obviously im talking about spending an hour at most and having a few drinks and not a days boozing.

I would imagine that it is like in most (continental) European countries, that you can take a young child along into a pub during day time (before 7 or 8 pm). Most of the pubs do food and cater for families as well (often with cheaper children menus).

Richard

This is what I thought myself but i would like some definate clarification as i know the rules on children in pubs are not always clear. I do feel rather hypocritical as i personally do not like to see children in pubs at all!

If your child behaves well it's not a problem. It's quite common for families to visit pubs in Belgium.

As long as you are in non-smoking surroundings I do not see what harm could be done to a small child by visiting a pub in the daytime or early evening.

It would be much nicer for your son if you sat outside, I think. Many Brugge bars etc have tables outside.

It might also be nicer for other customers. In my experience of toddlers, sitting in one place for an hour or so is not their idea of fun (and rightly so).

If you wnat to take your son to a ub, there's no problem whatsoever here in Belgium.

Last year we took our then eight month old into a bar in brugge--don't remember the name, it was attached to this cool gift shop and was along the canal with an outside patio. it was during the day and we sat outside--tour boats would pass bye and people would wave at my baby. people on the patio were nice as well--when a couple left, the lady could tell I was looking for a spot to sit and feed my baby--not on a tall bar stool--and she gave me her seat when she left.

As mentioned in previous replies, it is allowed.
Since Belgian politicians are not courageous enough yet to ban smoking in bars, do check before you enter how the air is and decide to sit outside if necessary or choose a place where you can eat small things, then most probably smoking is not allowed there.

Travel Tips for Brugge

Hotel discount card

by Dabs

I assume that most if not all hotels give out these cards, I believe it's a way to promote people actually staying in Brugge instead of day tripping in. We got a discount on everything we did in Brugge, the canal trip, Town Hall, Belfort as well as the boat trip to Damme and the In Flanders Field Museum in Ieper (Ypres) and probably saved about 15E altogether.

Be sure to check in your hotel before you go out exploring and ask to see if they have one of these cards for you.

The canal tour. And don't miss...

The canal tour. And don't miss the Michangelo statue in the church. Also find the smallest street in Brugge, it has a couple of taverns on it and one serves 126 different beers. The horse carriage tour. The guide was very informative and the LACE. We had a difficult time choosing one thing of lace. Therefore we have several items of lace

WALKING IS SO REWARDING....

Walk around and go to the Tourist Office first of all; then, after a coffee or beer have a tour by horse&carriage, your feet can rest, you just have to look around you, absorb all the beauty and listen to what the coachman explains to you in different languages; after that a boat tour through the canals and you will be surprised how amazing Brugge is seen from the water......here too the man/woman who steers the boatsthrough all the canals will explain everything and point out special buildings and sights!

I visit Brugge, only half an hour from my hometown (although I start with having to take the ferry across our own river SCHELD) very often, so I feel at home there and have friends there......always a warm welcome........

Handmade Belgian Chocolates

by Markyreid

We stumbled across this chocolatier shop and were very impressed by the chocolates inside. The owner assured us that they were one of only 3 or 4 choclatiers that actually hand made their chocolates. Apparently, all the others are mass produced. Regardless of this, the chocolates from this store were substantially nicer than the other chocolates we tried while in Brugge, and there were a few.
We bought 250 grams for 4 euro 50.

Brugge 2002 : Wednesday 10th of april I visited the exposition : Jan van Eyck, early Netherlandish painting and southern Europe. Well if you are passing in Brugge, you 'should visit this magnificent exposition (from March 15th till June 30th 2002). Everywhere in the city you see billboards and flyers that show one of the most beautiful paintings of jan van Eyck : the man with the blue hat.
