getting to Charleroi
by Frank222
Hi
Has anyone taken the shuttle bus from Brugge to Charleroi? It says it takes 2 hours. I've a flight departing at 11:30 - is getting the 9:00 shuttle advisable or is it cutting it a bit fine? Any other way of getting to Charleroi fron Brugge?
Many thanks for any advice.
Frankie

If you are going by Ryanair it's not cutting it too fine, but too late altogether: Ryanair closes check-in at Charleroi 40 minutes before departure of the flight in question!
Alternatives are train to Bruxelles-Midi and Ryanair coach (1 hr) from there, timetable is on Charleroi Airport's website, or train all the way to Charleroi-Sud (which also requires changing at Bruxelles-Midi) and local bus or taxi from there to the airport.

I agree with Gaminari, it is too short time.
There are more shuttles from Brussels South/Midi station.
See: http://www.charleroi-airport.com/doc.php?nd=1101&tid=101&site=1&lg=2
However, I found the shuttle rather off-schedule. I remember taking one and arrived well on time. The shuttle bus left 45 minutes late (probably because the bus wasn't full!) and only 'just' made it on time for my Ryanair flight to Venice.

Remember Ryanair luggage limit is not the usual 20 kg, but 15.

Hi reckoner, look at:

There is a direct shuttle at 3.15 and 5.15 (you'll need to take the 3.15). And there's a link where you can buy tickets.

Go to the Grand Place. The architecture is really cool and colorful and the cafes on the terrace were fun to stop at too. Even though my friends and I only stopped at Brugge passing from Brusells to Lille, we still thought that it was a great city. We spent most of the time exploring down the small alleyways and just going wherever we felt like. It was pouring down rain though, and we couldn't find any umbrellas so we had to make do with clear plastic rain ponchos. We have pictures of ourselves and to this day we still say that we looked like three giant condoms walking down the street!!!

...and yet, sooo far away, awwwww! From the observation deck at the summit of the Belfort here, you can see how many km. you are from many different European locations. Only 270km from fabulous, wonderful, incomparable PARIS, ohhhh! if only there were time for a quick Thalys trip over to the City of Lights. Not this time. Next year, though. Mark these words. ;-)))
Grooten Tol, or Big Tax House
by irisbe
Just at the other side of the Poortersloge you'll find the Grooten Tol.
During the Middle Ages, tax needed to be paid on all goods that were brought in from the ships in the harbour. In front of it was the public city Weight (stadswaag) and the crane with which the goods were unloaded before weighted and transported to the nearby market(s).
The gotic front dates from 1470.
The small part at the left that is sticking out is the guilt house of the people unloading the ships.
Above the entrance you will notice the wheapon shield of the Lords of Luxembourg, the Knights of the Gulden Vlies.
Nowadays the city library of Bruges is located in these buildings
Delicious Belgian Chocolates
by Toyin
I used to think Chocolate is only the exclusive rights of the Swiss, untill I got to Bruges. They have their own very unique Chocolates which cost me some furtunes, as I have to buy as much as possible back to Paris.
Canal path to Damme
by Poznick
Spend half a day making the walk from the north east corner of Brugge, along Damse Vaart Zuid, to the small town of Damme (about 5km distance each way). The entire walk is along a serene, tree-lined canal. Break in Damme and grab a drink at one of the many cafes, and head back on the opposite side of the canal, along the horse path.
Questions and Answers
Q: Castle ten Berghe. "Hi!
Can anyone tell me whether the Castle ten Berghe can be visited by day trippers or is it only for guests staying overnight?..."
A: "No idea about the first part of your post. I don't see why you couldn't go and have a meal or a coffee or something. Or even go and just wander round the grounds...."
