Beer festival. Info, please.

by Miguelzgz

Hi all.
Last year we visited Brugge and in one of the bars, one of the locals told us about a "beer festival", or "beer week" hold in that city at mid november...more or less. It looked pretty interesting(we LOVE beer) and as this year we are not going to do a long trip, we would like to go back to Brugge and enjoy the festival.

We guess prices will rise during the fest. so in your opinion, do you think it is worthy to go to that marbelous city during those special days?

Also, are there diferent festivals in diferent cities in Belgium? I guess so, so...is it posible to get a calendar of festivals? This time we would like to visit diferent cities and go to Holland for 2 days too.

Thank you very much.

Hi Mike,

I'm sorry to disappoint you but the annual beer festival on the Grand Place is far from being the best thing a local is eagerly waiting for...ok, you can find lots of different beers (so do you in some pubs: Bier circus, Delirium,...) but the prices are rather high, it's usually crowded (that means queue) and the bouncers can be quite rude as well!

Much better and much less known: http://www.festivalbruxellensis.be

Also last year there was an Open Brewery Day : http://www.brasseriesportesouvertes.be/
not sure it will happen again this year but that was a really great day ;-)

And any time in Brussels, the Gueuze museum which is indeed the Cantillon brewery : http://cantillon.be/

Hi Djinn76, thank you very much for your reply. I easily understand why do locals "fear" the festival. It may be similar to my town. We have a big festival in October and many, many locals(including us) scape during that week. Not when you are a teenager off course.

I will have a look on the links you sent, and hopefully we'll do it to Belgium again this year. Delirium Tremens bar in Brussels is fantastic.

Thanks again.

Travel Tips for Brugge

Brugge Locals are not that freindly

by pigletsmom

Brugge is used to getting so many tourists a year, that it seemed to me that the locals were not very friendly and quite jaded by all the visitors. Even the people working in the tourist office were rather cold and aloof. I don't think they even smiled. I had a restaurant owner get rather nasty with me because I wanted to split a meal with my freind. He was absolutely furious and asked us to leave. Any way, that was my experience.

DEJA VU!

NOT JUST SEEING A MCDONALD'S IN THE GROTE MARKT OF BRUGGE, BUT ACTUALLY EATING AT A MCDONALD'S! WHO WOULD HAVE GUESSED?

This might sound like a weird fondest memory, but imagine being an American who avoids eating a McDonalds at home. Imagine this American going all the way to Belgium, being in one of the most beautiful European cities in the world. Think of all the charming 'old world' eateries, offering a real European meal, to choose from. (IT WASN'T BY MY CHOICE, MY BELGIAN FRIENDS WANTED TO EAT THERE.) Now, imagine how rude that American would seem if she said, 'Oh no. Not McDonalds!' So, I kept quiet and went 'along with the flow.' The food was much the same as at home, we had a lot of laughs, my friends enjoyed their meal and I was still amazed that there was a McDonalds in the beautiful old town square of Brugge.

John Nepomuk at the bridge over the Dijver

by irisbe

Belgium,Bruges,Statue of Saint John Nepomuk, a czeck priest (Prague) who was killed and thrown into the river because he refused to reveil a confession to a jealous husband who suspected his wife cheating on him. He is the saint of the confession and the saint of the sailors (because one of the obliged 3 miracles was that his body kept floating on the water) His bones were recently (1996) rediscovered in a shrine in the Saint Carolus Boromelus Church in Antwerp. The relict, probably some where in history brought to that church by Czech Jesuits, was locked up in a secret place, behind a wooden facade that only could be opened with a key...after you could find the secret hidden lock to put the key in! I was really curious about why this statue was in Bruges. I could understand its location: at a bridge, but why Bruges?
I learned that in the 19th century John Nepomuk was a bit of a "fashion" saint.
So Bruges wanted its statue too!
Statue is on the bridge of the Dyver and the Wolstraat.

You Can Take Your Horse To Water...

by johngayton

...but you can't make it drink!

I liked this little horse head fountain which I think was on Walplein, the same street as the Halve Maan brewery, heading towards the Minnewaterpark.

This is where the horse and cart people (sorry I should have said "carriage") take their horses for a break. I don't think this is one of the places from which you can take rides from but the carriagieres seemed more than happy for those with children to get a few pics taken whilst the horses were having their feed. I didn't see any money changing hands for the pic-ops and so that's one big plus for what I otherwise found to be a tourist trap of a city.

Ronde Van Vlaanderen - 1

by filipdebont

Sunday April 3rd 2005 : start of Tour of Flanders (Ronde van Vlaanderen) - 256 kilometers of naughty hills and cobbled stones.

The picture shows Ludo Dierckxsens - (team Landbouwkrediet - Colnago).

The people shouted Ludo - Ludo when he passe by, one thing is sure is the most popular cyclists of belgium and maybe also the most sympathetical. Race bike + a pair of strong legs
