Combine a medieval town with a green walk
by Helga67
We went to Damme for one day, when staying at the Belgian Coast. It was a nice sunny day out. We did not only enjoy the lovely town but also had a nice walk around Damme. It's nice walking next to the canal. It's very relaxing. See more pics of the surroundings in my travelogue.
A very rural town
by Martinewezel
Damme is such a little town (in fact it's a city!), and so rural, that this is the view you have in the main street "Kerkstraat" at the opposite side of the church and at only 50 meters from the "Grand Place" :-)
Don't get me wrong, I think Damme is the most sympathetic town in the region, and I just can't get enough of it!
Where the name 'Damme' comes from
by Maeve_81
In the old days Damme was called 'Hondsdamme' (dog dam).
This comes from a legend :
the workers who where digging the canal got scared of a dog, who was howling and 'spooking' around the workplace. They thought it was the devil, because the riverbank always broke.
One day the caught the dog and trew him in the river and since them the bank never broke again.
Till Ulenspiegel
by Helga67
The connection between the small town of Damme and the legend of Till Ulenspiegel goes back to the 17th century. Till Ulenspiegel, born in Damme, was a hero for freedom and a joker, symbolising the Flemish spirit. He wanders about with his girlfriend Nele and his companion Lamme Goedzak.
If you want to learn more about this legend, visit the Till Ulenspiegel Museum.
