Book town Damme
by Martinewezel
Probably only interesting for people who know the Dutch language: Damme is known for its books (book market, auctions, presentations...)
Every second Sunday of the month there is a market in front of the Town hall, where about 40 exhibitors sale old and new books.
Though books in foreign languages can be found here, the greater part are Dutch books.
A stroll along the Zuidervaartje
by Helga67
When you're coming by car and park on the parking south of Damme (next to the Damse Vaart), you can walk to the village via a small and lovely walking path starting on the parking and going along a little canal called Zuidervaartje. It's really a nice walk. We enjoyed it very much. Back on the street, you'll need to go left to end up on the market square.
Market on Thursday
by Martinewezel
Damme has very few shops, so the weekly market on Thursday has a lot of success. We were charmed by this bakery stall, ran by a very gentle couple. They decorated their stall with little plates full of proverbs. Very original. While my husband and I were reading the proverbs, the owner offered us a piece of cake. Delicious! They also sell bread prepared according to traditional methods. Such as heavy sourdough bread. Highly recommended!
This market sells also vegetables, fruit, cheese, sweets and meat.
Tijl Uilenspiegel
by Maeve_81
Tijl Uilenspiegel is a living hero in Damme.
This youngman, his girlfriend Nele and his best friend Lamme Goedzak, put up the battle against the Spanish in the Netherlands. There are lots of stories about him... too much to tell about it, so google it.
A pleasure to do is to look for statues of Tijl Uilenspiegel in Damme, you'll be suprised!
They also have an Uilenspiegel museum.
