Booktown

Since 1st May 1997, Damme has officially become a Booktown. More than 10 shops specialise in one or other kind of books.
Every second Sunday of the month, there is also a book market on the Market Square.

A trip to Brugge

Brugge is only 5 kilometers from Damme. As the center of Brugge cannot be reached by car, I'd advice to take a bus or to rent a bike in Damme.

We parked our car in Damme, took a cup of coffee in one of the multiple cafés there and then made the trip by bike to Brugge.
Visiting Brugge by bike is an unique experience.

a trip to "het Zwin"

"Het Zwin" is a nature preserve for birds, located NE of Brugge.
This preserve was developped by the gradually growth of sandbanks in the channels form Brugge to the Northsea. A process of many many years since the Middle Ages.

This picture was taken in Winter at the border of Belgium with the Netherlands, in a town called Retranchement.

The nature preserve can be visited too. Take your rubber boots with you!

History

In 1134 a storm surge ravaged the North Sea coast and tore out a creek all the way up to the neighbourhood of Bruges. A dyke was built to protect Bruges and a fishing village grew by this "dam". Soon, Bruges saw the advantages for a little port and gave Damme city rights. After a canal was digged from Bruges to Damme, the town quickly turned into a dynamic port.
A lot has happened since. It's no longer a port but a lovely booktown. How things can change over time!

It as about 12 years ago that the canal was frozen and the ice was good enough to allow sporting A good pair of skates, bought or rented, and warm clothes
