Westhoek Nature Reserve
by filipdebont
I found it very relaxing to walk in the Westhoek Nature Reserve. It is a bit of the beaten path, as most people who visit De Panne do not come so far, to go to the beach, and only walk on the beach promenade. Good for them of course, and even better for us, nature lovers, like this it is not very crowded over here , and like this it is still possible to listen and hear the singing of many birds in this nature reserve.
Beach cabins
by filipdebont
You can't miss them, the colourful beach cabins.
I have a few colleagues at work, who live near the Belgium coast, and they call these beach cabins "strangetenten", in fact this the Flemish dialect for strandtenten, which means in English beach tents. It is kind of funny that even in a small country as Belgium there are so many different dialects. It is kind of strange, as De Panne is really not far from where I live (about 45 minutes by car), but when I walk around here among the many other visitors, it always gives me a kind of being on holiday feeling.
Preparing the sailing cars
by filipdebont
It looks very spectacularly, this sand yachting.
And even looking at it is exciting.
You can also see the drivers prepare their sailing cars before they start riding; they fix the ropes, fix the sail, check all the safety equipment, brakes, etc . . .
Lets start digging . . .
by filipdebont
That is what these young kids are doing; they are digging the creature up.
It was kind of a funny sight.
Maybe they were just curious to know what was under the sand . . .
Or maybe they wanted to free him . . .
I don't know
Dumont district
by filipdebont
Between 1892 and 1913 there was a general urbanisation in De Panne by the Brussels architect Albert Dumont.
Like this the Dumont district was created.
Special for this neighbourhood are the rural cottages which were placed in the dunes, but with lots of respect for the natural dune relief.
After World War One they introduced a kind of modernistic style with flat roofs, strongly rounded angles and big windows.
Since 1995 this Dumont district is protected as city view with certain monuments and important buildings.
