Novotel really good hotel exceeded our expectations
by TripAdvisor Member itsabizza
Just returned from an amazing weekend at this hotel. we are a family group and the children have already asked when we can return, it is the best hotel we have stayed in (to quote them). The staff are friendly and all speak english. Breakfast was a choice of hot and cold food with a separate breakfast table for the children to make their choices from they even got a small toy with their breakfast. The bar staff were pleasant and polite as well stopping to talk about our day and advising on where would be good to visit. Our rooms were clean and spacious. The hotel is only a short walk to the Menin Gate well worth a visit, The Flanders Field Museum again well worth a visit even the children enjoyed it.
The Novotel has it all

The Novotel in Ieper was a jewel in the desert after some previous dodgy accomodation in Metz and Saint Quentin. The hotel is ideally situated in the centre of town and only minutes away from the Menin gate and other attractions in the town centre. The rooms were spacious and well appointed and very clean and the staff friendly and helpful.
Our only criticisms would be that the dining room was too crowded at breakfast time , the internet availablity that was verbally promised to be included cost another €20. Car parking in the hotel car park was another €8.00 per night but there was plenty of car parking in the church grounds next door.
Overall excellent value for € 79 per night B&B
Pathetic!

We booked this hotel several months before we left and then cofirmed our booking before leaving. When we got to the hotel we were told that they had overbooked and that they had placed us at another hotel, which was nothing like the one we paid for. On top of telling us that we could not stay there, they then had the hide to turn around and say that we had two drink vouchers to THEIR hotel that we could come back and use. I DONT THINK SO! Talk about rubbing it in your face.
Great location and great hotel
by TripAdvisor Member splurge
The hotel is located just off the main square in Ypres and 3 minutes walk from Menin Gate
The hotel is modern and clean. The evening meal available is of a good standard and there is a comfortable bar area. The staff are all friendly and helpful
This is a great hotel for the money
Ieper (Ypres) Novotel - great hotel and excellent value
by TripAdvisor Member oracledba
We stayed for one night on 26th August 2007 and can thoroughly recommend it. The location is excellent, a few minutes walk from the main square and the Menin Gate, and the room we stayed in was huge even for a family of four! The hotel is modern and extremely well kept, with friendly staff and a great breakfast buffet which was included in the very reasonable price. We had an evening meal there which was excellent (the best steak I've had for a long time), if somewhat pricey. Kids are welcome and there is a childrens' playroom and a couple of Play Stations near the dining area for them to use. Don't use the hotel's underground car park though, which is 10 euro per night I think - there is free parking around the corner near the church. Ieper (Ypres) is a pretty town, easy to walk around and the Flanders Fields Museum is interesting; the Menin Gate ceremony at 8.00pm daily is also a must if you're there (but you need to arrive by 7.30pm I would say if you want to be at the front of the crowd - though this does vary depending on time of year and weather). There are plenty of bars/restaurants around the main square or nearby if you don't want to stay in the hotel and the cherry beer, Belgian chocolate and waffles are to be recommended!
Avoid

We booked and paid for three rooms two months in advance, but when we arrived we were told there were no rooms available-apparently they had been given to a coach party that had arrived just ahead of us. We asked to see the manger or the duty manager but neither were on site or contactable. After a 40 minute wait the girl at reception eventually found us an inferior, cheaper hotel, 20 minutes drive away in another town.
I have written to the Hotel but have not even had the courtesy of an acknowledgement.
Avoid booking with Novotel or you may also have your stay in Ieper ruined
Excellent Hotel

Stayed at this hotel whilst visiting the battlefields and was very pleasantly suprised by the quality of the accomodation.
The rooms were very spacious and modern and the breakfasts were excellent.
We found; although the bar was a little expensive, it was a good meeting place and had a good atmosphere. The restaurant looked very nice but cannot comment on the quality of evening meals as we ate in the square every night. The main reason for eating in the square was down to its close location. Both the Menin Gate and the square were no more than 5 mins walk away.
Good location

A bog-standard Novotel, this hotel's main selling point is its location a few minutes walk from the Menin Gate, the Linen Hall and the attractive town centre. It offers chargeable parking, but free parking is available in a square a few yards away. This is the only recognisable chain hotel in town (Best Westerns are not chain hotels) and is heavily used by both individuals and groups visiting the Flanders First World War sites. Judged as such it is fine; somewhat anonymous, but entirely adequate for a short stay.
It's A Good Pick!

We absolutely enjoyed our stay at this hotel. It's centrally located just steps from the town square and it's a clean, well designed and furnished hotel. we loved our spacious room with a great view of the street below. The hotal staff was very kind and helpful. We found no problems with this hotel, and I'd recommend it to anyone going to Ieper (Yres).
Convenient Location

This hotel offers comfortable and clean rooms. Breakfast wasn't so good. There were too much guests and not enough staff to clean it up. Breakfast itself was so and so. Not much choice and the scrambled eggs were very white and absolutely tasteless. I think they used flour to mix it with the eggs. Dinner was better, but just one guy to serve, so it took us hours to finish dinner. The location however is great for visiting Ypres and the rooms are OK.
One tip: if you want to see the Last Post at the Menengate, which starts every evening at 8:00pm, make sure that you are there at 7:30 pm. Normally there are a lot of people and you don't see a thing when your are in the back rows.

Info from

Take the train to Ostend (just over 2 hours) or De Panne (a bit longer). Times, details and fares in English here;

Then take the tram to Nieuwpoort. Info in English here:

Train is not the best option for Ieper to Nieuwpoort, as it is a long way round.
Go to
http://hari.b-rail.be/HAFAS/bin/query.exe/en
Make sure you select "all products" for the type transportation (defaults to trains only) and "all stops" for the type of destinations (default is train stations only). Then just enter Ieper and Nieuwpoort. Fastest Ieper to Nieuwpoort is about 1 1/2 hours by bus, but it regularly takes 2 hours.

Using buses is the most practical way. With 1 change in Veurne or Diksmuide.
What a pity you're not doing this in summer time! All you would need to do would be renting a bicycle and cycling along the Ieperlee Canal, the river IJzer and/or an old railway track. Quite a straight line!
