The 'Zwin' is one of the beautiful and scientifically most important natural reserves of Belgium. The role that this silted up sea-arm played in the history of medieval Flanders cannot be overrated. Via this sea-arm that had been created by a flooding of the North-Sea, ships from all over the (then known) world could sail to the city of Bruges. Bruges rose to become one of the most important medieval European ports. Because of the international cloth-trade the Flemish hinterland also profited from this economically very favorable situation. When in the aftermath of the high Middle-Ages, the 'Zwin' started to silt up, Bruges lost all advantages and turned into a small provincial city. Until it was discovered by modern tourism ...........

K N O K K E is considered to be the most exclusive beach town in Belgium, primarily because of 'Knokke-Zoute', an area of splendid villas where the Belgian jet-set feels at home.

"The founder- Mr Lippens himself"

"Het Zwin" - first wild life reservation area in Belgium (1952). It was founded by the director of the Company "Het Zoute"- mr Leon lippens himself and actually called "Mr Ecologist avant la lettre"
His son, actual mayor of Knokke is better known as mr.Coolbox - but this is another story in Belgian politics.
You will find the statue of the founder at the entrance of the reservation

Storks and gooses in a unique wild life reservation area at the Belgian coast. My grandchild will be born next month (March 2005). Will it be found under the the gooseberry bush??

A cold coast...

Located at the northern end of Belgium, the northern coast is a beautiful space of nature where you can pass days and days running around discovering the spots.
The town of Knokke-Zoute (eastern part of Knokke), not far away from the dutch border, is where I pass most of my holidays. In fact, as I own a flat there (with view on the coast), it draws me there most of my freetime. My children like to play in the sand (yes, even in winter) and we all enjoy the hour long footwalks through the natural reserve "the Zwijn".
