open hours of Supermarkets in Oostende

by PhillyJohn

Does anyone know the opening hours of the food stores (GB etc)? We arrive on a Sunday afternoon and hope to buy a few provisions. Is it possible? I know European shops tend to be closed on Sunday, but I am hoping.
If not Sunday then what weekday hours?

Hmmmn, well, I don't know the answer, except to note that train stations in Europe often have grocery stores that are granted permission to stay open longer hours than most stores...unfortunately, I haven't found the train station website yet (if one), but if you are coming by train, and if the store is open, I would encourage you to shop (or at least check the hours) before you leave the station...

Of course, now that I have given my non-answer, someone like Pieter is bound to jump in with the right answer ;-)

Supermarkets in Belgium are generally closed on Sunday, see this for a Delhaize in Ostende: http://www.openingsuren.com/detail.php?edit=5001845
In Brussels I could tell you the exceptions (GB now tends to run the small shops attached to petrol/gas stations, for instance), but for Ostende I can only suggest you look for a "night shop", there is always one open somewhere.

But according to the same site, the Delhaize in Torhoutsesteenweg IS open but only in the mornings (until 12.30). I only found this through googling in Flemish and ending up on the same site and picking the page called public holidays. That also gives you these ones, open until 13.00:

And a handful of butchers and a place where you can buy frozen food...

Funny that it's easier to buy DVDs and perfume on a Sunday than food. Here's the full list:

I remember Sunday closures being the most boring thing about life in Belgium to a Swedish-English family.

Thanks for the info. It is a bit of a shock for Americans who are used to shopping 24 hours a day (ha ha), but it is good for the workers to have some time too. I am sure we will manage for one day.

Hi, I live in Oostende and it is difficult to find a supermarket open on sunday afternoon, a few are open on sunday morning. It depends offcourse what you want to buy. Butchers and bakeries are open offcourse. The Delhaize (near the station) and GB (Alfons Pieterslaan) are open till 8PM every day and on friday till 9PM, but closed on sunday, if that is of any help. In the Kappellestraat (the shopping street) there is a shop in the beginning of the street and maybe that one will be open on sunday, it sells fruit and vegetables. Good luck and enjoy Oostende.

The bigger supermarkets in England are open at 10am on Sundays and close at 4pm. This is throughout. However there are a number of small general stores that are open until quite late, their stock is limited.

Travel Tips for Oostende

Ostend is 'The City on the...

by annelies77

Ostend is 'The City on the Sea'. It became popular just before the 1900's and a lot of the architecture reflects this. Ostend has literally everything - its own beaches, a world famous casino and racecourse, and outstanding shopping. Nightlife, as you would expect in a major resort and city, is excellent - many bars close when the last person has left and there is a selection of nightclubs and discotheques to choose from. You can get anywhere on the coast from here by tram, and Brugge is less than 15 minutes away by rail.

From the beginning of spring till end of summer, you can take the tram to Nieuwpoort (some 15 km away) and then board the boat 'The Seastar' for the trip back along the coastline, with one special ticket. Sometimes they even organise a barbecue at sea.
