Travel Tips for Oostende

History of Ostend

by grayfo

Ostend was the result of three villages merging, the eastern village of the island of Testerep (which became incorporated into the mainland), the western village of Westende and the central village of Middelkerke. In the 15th century the Duke of Burgundy Philip the Handsome built the port of Ostend which boosted the development of the then small fishing village. From July 1601 to September 1604 the siege of Ostend was part of the Eighty Years' War, ending with the victory of the Spanish over the Dutch who held the fortified port.

Oostende Tip

I just love our Belgian North Sea coast. Especially in the wintertime. Then it's also less crowed.

Even in november you can have nice & sunny (but very cold) days.

Just off the main road are numerous fish stands where the hungry visitor can find every possible fish preparation (mussels, crab meat, young herring -'maatjesharing' - and others) to eat while continuing his stroll alongside the quay until the beach. Almost halfway to the beach is a smaller fish market - the 'Vistrap'- where larger specimen can be bought (mainly sole, plaice, shrimps).
Some typical Belgian fish dishes are: 'Sole à l'Ostendaise' (sole with a white wine sauce and shrimps), 'Tomate Crevette' (a tomato filled with shrimps), 'Paling in 't groen' (eel in green sauce prepared with parsil, spinach and other green herbs).

Pearls of the sea.

by csordila

When a grain of sand enters an oyster shell, the oyster covers it with nacre, a substance the oyster also uses to coat the inside of its shell. Layer upon layer of nacre is deposited on the grain of sand, which gradually turns into a lustrous pearl. But…only 1 out of 15.000 wild oysters contains a pearl!
So keep on searching!

MERCATOR MARINE. You cannot miss it arriving at Ostend. The Mercator Yacht Harbour, the three masted sailing ship 'Mercator',it also contains many yachts. It is nice to take a walk among the pride of many seaman.
