It's not exactly the French Riviera, but the beach in Oostende is a wide and sandy place that on a sunny day, could be quite enjoyable. However, this is the North Sea, so you can expect cold water and gusty winds at any time throughout the year.
This was about 1991.
We sailed from Hull to Zeebruger.
This was a VIP trip to Mechelen.
I have been in the car trade from leaving school in 1962 mainly with car accident repairs and restoration of old cars.
At that time Du Pont Paint was one of the best for car refinnishing.
Things change a bit with the introduction of water based paint.
Mechelen was a very nice place and we stayed in Antwerp band traveled to Mechelen the 2 days we were there. The people at Du Pont made us very welcome and spent a lot of money entertaining us.
The food at the restaurants were we were taken was very good and the wine flowed down like nectar.
The person who was looking after us was fron Denmark.
We had a great time not al educational but plenty of booze.
The last day I remember eating in Antwerp this looked a real nice City .
Every year at the beginning of January the newyearsdive takes place at the beach of Oostende. In recent years it has become a big media event. Its also broadcasted live on television, Kanaal2, www.kanaal2.be. About 12000 people are going to Oostende on that day.
When you visit Oostende I think "Stene Dorp" is something you HAVE to see. Why? Because it´s so authentic and so different then the rest of the city!
Stene Dorp is like a small village in the outskirts of Oostende with all small white pitoresque houses and charming church. It´s the perfect place to go to on a sunny day and to visit one of the restaurants there for some nice food or to drink a trappist!
You can easily get there from the station by taking bus number 6 called "Stene Dorp". The ride should take about 20 minutes.
Other places and names remind us of the connection between Oostende and the Royal Family. In front of the St. Peter and St. Paul's church is a statue for King Albert I and his wife Queen Elisabeth. Both monarchs symbolize the resistance and the endurance of the Belgian people during the First World War.
