UEFA CUP v Newcastle

by glen006

I'm a Newcastle fan thinking about going to Waregem for the tie on the 14th of Feb. Firstly does anyone know if there is much crowd trouble in Belgium, and secondly are there any sites to check out trains between London and Waregem?

The only crowd trouble I have heard of in Belgium was the Heysel (now Roi Baudouin) football stadium disaster in May 1985, caused by English fans. I don't think such problems have made the news much, but then I don't follow football so what do I know?
For trains from London to Brussels (Gare du Midi) via Lille, see www.eurostar.com.
For trains within Belgium, and indeed the whole of Europe (if you select international instead of national), see http://www.b-rail.be/main/E/
From Brussels to Waregem takes about an hour, changing at Ghent, e.g.
Dep. Bruxelles-Midi 12.06 (train going to Ostende) arr. Gent Sint Pieters:12:33
Dep. Gent Sint Pieters 12.40 (train going to Kortrijk) arr. Waregem 13:00
This being the case, you could also get off the train at Lille-Europe, cross over to the station Lille-Flandres, and catch a train to Kortrijk and then Waregem from there, which takes between 59 mins and 1h20 mins, e.g. (this is the fastest connection):
Dep. Lille Flandres 16:08 arr. Kortrijk 16:38
Dep. Kortrijk 16:57 arr. Waregem 16.57

Sorry that should have been arr. 17.07 and of course it would be the Eurostar you get off at Lille. But depending on time of travel you could find it is just as fast via Brussels, either way you have 2 changes: Brussels and Ghent within the same stations or Lille (change to a different station) and Kortrijk, and I think at certain times it may also be necessary to change at Tournai.

Please be aware that the match between Zulte Waregem and Newcastle is played in Ghent and not in Waregem! (because the stadium of Waregem is too small).
If you come by eurostar, you can easily reach Ghent from Brussels by train and even think that it is pretty easy to get to the football stadium from Ghent railway station by tram. Don't be afraid about any forms of hooliganism. Zulte Waregem is a small team with very friendly supporters which always organise big parties no matter the result of the game ;-).

Waregem plays in the stadion of Ghent (there own stadion is too small for Europian competitian, so they play there matches in "het Ottestadion").

Eurostar to Brussel, then InterCity-train to Ghent-Sint-Pieters (30 minutes if you take the direct train, about 3 or 4 train each hour). (See www.nmbs.be)

Then bus to Gentbrugge (www.delijn.be - Dutch Only):
- Bus 96 (Aalst)
- Bus 27 OR 28 (Dendermonde)

" Texas of Flanders "

In most of the tourist guide, you will not find big things on the subject of Waregem. Indeed, this became with the passing of the years a center of very important business center not only for Belgium, but with connections in the entire world.

---oooOOOooo---

Dans la plupart des guide touristiques, vous ne trouverez pas grand chose au sujet de Waregem. En fait, c'est devenu au fil des ans un centre d'affaires très important non seulement pour la Belgique, mais avec des connections dans le monde entier.

" Waregem Course "

Two things nevertheless to signal: The horse race: "Waregem course"...

---oooOOOooo---

Deux choses toutefois à signaler: La course de chevaux: "Waregem course"...

---oooOOOooo---

" Flanders fields cimetery "

and ...The only American cemetery of the country: Flanders fields cimetery. (not to confuse with the region of Ieper , even if the two are secured in the facts)

---oooOOOooo---

et...le seul cimetière Américain du pays : Flanders fields cimetery. ( ne pas confondre avec la région d' Ypres , même si les deux sont liés dans les faits)
