    Hotel in the center

    by

The hotel is very well located. We arrived by train and walked 5 minutes from Central Station to Grassmarkt, a few meters beyond the square is the hotel, very close to the Grand Platz and the Queen Gallery (Koninginnegalerij). There are plenty of places around to go for breakfast.
The hotel itself is nothing especial, the room was quite small, there were no space for the luggage. Anyway, it was clean and well located.
We paid 239 € for 4 nights without breakfast.

Where to buy lace in Brussels or Brugge

by trixee

Hi all,

I'll be dividing my week between Brussels and Brugge, and am wondering where is a good place to buy lace - I'm interested in both traditional and modern patterns and colours. Names and/or addresses would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Trish :)

There are numerous places where you can buy lace. I just can't tell you which is the best. On the Grand Place, in the streets around the Grand Place...there are lots of stores everywhere. If you walk from the Grand Place to Mannenken Pis, you'll find several lace shops too. Make your choice on the spot.

Hi There is lace all over the place, the problem being to know what is "hand done" in Belgium and what is machine made in China.

My wife purchased some in Brussels and also Bruges, but I was fed up waiting, she saw many stores.
She bought from a store in Grand Place, top left hand side. Expensive but nice. I might have a photo of the shop on my Brussels page.

Thanks Mike, I guess that's what I was trying to get at, where to get something original and handmade.

Travel Tips for Brussels

Brussels, you said?

by Norali

Well, by saying that you are in / live in / head to Brussels, you are probably referring to Brussels city or to Bruxelles-Capitale Region. Both are correct since the Region is so small that you are not even aware of that it comprehends 19 communes... and that the latter are worth a visit as well.

Besides, current configuration of the Region was defined in June 1989. On June 18, 1989, Brussels people elected their MPs so as to grant the region with same status as Wallonia and Flemish Regions.

19 communes are, in French and Flemish:
Anderlecht | Auderghem - Oudergem | Berchem-Ste-Agathe - St.-Agatha-Berchem | Bruxelles - Brussel | Etterbeek | Evere | Forest | Ganshoren | Ixelles - Elsene | Jette | Koekelberg | Molenbeek-Saint-Jean - Molenbeek-Sint-Jan | Saint-Gilles - Sint-Gillis | Saint-Josse-ten-Noode - Sint-Joost-ten-Node | Schaerbeek | Uccle - Ukkel | Watermael-Boitsfort - Watermaal-Bosvoorde | Woluwé-Saint-Lambert - Sint-Lambrechts-Woluwe | Woluwé-Saint-Pierre - Sint-Pieters-Woluwe.

For instance, I use to say that I live in Brussels. That's true since my homeplace is Woluwé-Saint-Pierre, a municipality in Region of Bruxelles-Capitale... but it's not in Brussels municipality.

Official Languages: French and Dutch. You mainly hear French in the streets since 70-80% of Brussels population is "francophone" (French-speaking). Apart from that, you may hear at least Arab, African languages and languages of countries that are EU members... and of course, Dutch. In winter: smell of waffles in Brussels center streets; hot chocolate in heated cafés; music in Rue des Tongres for / while Christmas shopping

In spring: cherry blossom and season opening as for terrasse sitting :-)
Season opening as for walks through forests and green areas.
It's the season I enjoy most to go to markets. Don't ask me why. I hate doing it in summer when it's crowded and sticky hot.
In my study years, hearing tennis rallies, from a tennis court near my house, while I studied for my June exams. Frustrating!

In summer: heat and very often rain accompanying sales month (july)... and evening at Zizi and Aux délices de Capoue (ice-cream with Belgian speculoos). For that, see my Must-see activities tips.

In autumn: frenzy atmosphere when people return from holidays. Shops are packed with scholars and their mums trying to buy scholar stuffs. One has to buy new autumn cloth as well. A bit of rain. Hot chocolate season starts.

Belgian Beer

by sswagner

This is another famous aspect of Belgium. There are a wide variety to choose from. Therefore, the chance that you will find at least one to your liking is favorable. if you collect bottles and labels, this will be a place you want to visit. It is not difficult to find places that sell a wide variety. There just might be as many types of beer as there is chocolate. Belgium has some high calorie food and drink ready for your consumption.

One of the original towers that formed part of the city walls. This one was part of the gateway to the city. One of the towers was part of the gateway where the crimals and traitors came through to be imprisoned.

Television broadcasting

by irisbe

Belgium has many chanels and in different langauges as there are different language communities.
VRT;
RTL;
BRF; as the public ones, each often with different canals.
Additional we also have several commercial television chanels. I could not but make a halt and look at this reporter who did all by himself! Setting up the camera, filming and reporting beging filmed!
He also is the driver and the investigator I guess `-)
It must be low conjuncture at the television stations these days!
As every where, people needs to be multifunctional and work harder and harder.
But... admitt... it was a funny sight :)
