what is reasonable airfare to Brussels?

by bioman63

My wife and I are planning a bicycle trip around Belgium for late June - early July. Airfare has really gone up since our last trip to Europe a few years ago. Right now we are looking at right around 1000 per person round trip from D.C. Is that a good price? Should we jump or do you think prices will drop? p.s. we are teachrs on a pretty tight budget. Thanks for any advice!

Re: what is reasonable airfare to Brussels?

by GrumpyDiver

The prices do look reasonable for that time of year. A combination of high season, much higher fuel prices than a few years ago and a shakeout in the airline industry that saw a large number of carriers go broke all contribute to prices that are a lot higher than they were just a few years ago.

As was noted above, prices will go up, not down as you get closer to the departure date.

The Hostel

by bakpakchik

At the hostel, the facilities were much better than the 3 Ducks Hostel in paris. This place was actually quite posh. The bathrooms were huge and clean and the rooms and halls were carpeted. There was actually floor-space between the bunks! LOL. The bar and lounge area were marbled and there was a garden and a glass-covered conservatory, very posh indeed, and a good bargain for
15E.

Here, we are also at the very heart of the European Union: we drive in front of the imposing EU buildings housing the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers.

While Brussels places fewer demands to hurry everywhere and see everything, there is still plenty of things to do in Brussels. Brussels has excellent museums. There are, also, many opportunities for advantageous shopping.

Brussels is, also, a very pleasant city in the evening. Begin with dinner at one of the restaurants near the Grand Place, and then have coffee and a desert at a sidewalk cafe and watch the passers by. Possibly, find some entertainment for the evening near the Grand Place. First time visitors to Europe often have difficulty finding evening entertainment. Brussels is, sometimes, productive because first time visitors can succeed with a satisfying evening away from the hotel.

Brussels attracts visitors from all over Europe. The city's international atmosphere can be exhilarating. Visitors return to Brussels for this reason. Many visitors leave Brussels with an appreciation that this town is experienced and careful at entertaining visitors from abroad.

About immigrants and a small castle

by irisbe

The Little Castle is located where once was the Ansillon castle.
That last one was dedicated to military purposes.
The architecture is of a Neo-Tudor style, something very typical used by the military during the 19th century.

It is designed by a captain of the Engineers, a M.B. Meyers and was constructed between 1848 and 1852.

During the time after it was regularly enlarged and reshaped.

In the beginning in housed the carabineers, later on the infantry of the 9th squadron.

Right after WWII it was used as a prison for those who were accused of collaborating with the enemy.

More recently it was used as a recruitment centre for servicemen.
Ask many of the generation born in 50 and 60ties where they had to do their "3 days" service, although I think at the end it was just one day. Here you were proven or disproved to do your military service. It must have been the location where you could have witnessed the best acting scenes ever `-)
Not many liked the idea going into service for a year of longer against hardly any payment so many tried to escape by any medical of psychological exuses possible.

It is no longer the recruitment location these days: the military duty is no longer, only those who want to make a real carreer in the army will join, but not a "voluntary" training anymore as it used to be.

The place then came available and is used today as a host centre for applicants for political refugees status.

You will there for see many foreigners hanging around the area, and also scouts to search for people who want to do some cheap labour, bad paid and unofficially.
