If you had five days
by crmartins
to spend in Belgium and 4 palces (Brugge, Ghent, Antwerp and Belgium) to visit, how would you organize (or suggest me to) the days?
Thanks!!!
Re: If you had five days
by clunker
Brussels, Brugge, Ghent- 1 day. Antwerp-2 days. Maybe some here may disagree, but my wife and I really enjoyed Antwerp, and we didn't seem to be tripping over other tourists as much as we did in Brugge. Brussels was ok, haven't made it to Ghent yet.

Personally I'd spend a few days in the Belgian Ardennes since it is very different from Flanders (western Belgium).
Leuven is also a very nice and lively yet less touristic Belgian city.
Re: If you had five days

Leuven... yes, it's also a very good possibility (although I've already been there, before.)
thanks

But the Belgian Ardennes?
Bouillon, Dinant, Namen, Rochefort...
Re: If you had five days

you are right but I only have 5 days and I have a place to stay in Brussels. May it be in the next time?
Thanks for suggesting

It's a pity accomodation is so expensive there. Otrherwise I'd go there more often.
But, by the way, what do you suggest in Belgian Ardennes?
thanks!!!
Re: If you had five days

Belgian Ardennes: see my last reply (scroll up).
Grottoes, nature, walks, lovely little cities.
Castle (Bouillon), etc.
Surf here on VT for all those places! I've got a few too.

Depends somewhat on where you are staying, where you are starting from. Is the last location in your question meant to be Brussels the city not Belguim the country? With your stated locations I would plan 1/2 day each in Brugge and Ghent and one whole day in Brussels and Antwerp. Again it depends a lot on where you are planning to spend your nights - one place every night or a different one? Myself I would stay in Brussels near a train station every night. It also depends much on your interests as while all of these share some in common they each also have their own attractions. If this is your first time to visit I really don't think you will wrong with these. Enjoy.

Personally I think Bruges, Gent, Antwerp and Brussels is a bit much of a good thing. It's all Flanders whereas Wallonia (the French part of Belgium, to the east) is so very different in landscape, history and culture. The famous Ardennes ham comes from there. Castles, mountainous landscape, grottoes...
Just to give you an idea:
http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/2bf0c/575c8/ (Bouillon).
That's 4.11 hrs per public transportation from Antwerp but you'd be in another 'world'.
Closer is Durbuy, at 3 hrs per public transport (from Antwerp).

Or Namur, a larger city on the edge of the Ardennes. At just under 2 hours from Antwerp.

Travel Tips for Brussels
Weather forecast.
by breughel
On the VT travel forum a repeated question is that of the weather to be expected on a planned trip.
In Brussels, Belgium, with an Atlantic climate, vacations are often spoiled by rain.
For bRUSSELS, BELGIUM I use www.meteo.be (in 4 languages encl. English) from the Institut Royal Météorologique.
I also use the weather forecast from the Belgian (francophone) television www.rtbf.be/meteo (in French).
Good at short term. Not reliable at more than 3 days.
The weather is so changing in Belgium that nobody is able to tell you if it will rain the day after tomorrow or not. So never visit Belgium without taking your umbrella. You might leave your hotel in the morning with sunshine and get rain in the afternoon! The rain.
Words to describe Bruxelles
by Gillianina
I've got some words on my mind that I link with Bruxelles; I hope it helps you having an idea of how this city is : Europe, Art Nouveau, cosmopolitan, chocolate, pommes frittes (french fries, but they´re actually Belgian!!!) and Waffel... What else? Go and find out :-)
Here in the pic you see some friends and me, and some guys met along the way eating sinful Waffel with whipped cream!!
20 years & I actually learned something
by richiecdisc
About twenty years later, I had become quite the beer aficionado and having discovered Belgian beers at specialty pubs in the US I was now hankering to sample some on their own turf. I made plans to meet some friends from the UK at the 24 Hours of Beer festival in Antwerp. I had done my first swing through Bavaria and the Czech Republic earlier that fall and was currently staying with a friend in Southern Germany so all I had to do was jump on a train to Brussels. Of course, this time I wouldn’t be as foolish to rush through a city train station without some exploration just because its namesake vegetable didn’t appeal to me. I built a couple days exploration into the trip prior to the festival to take in the sights and cafes of the Belgian capital. I was pleasantly surprised to find a fascinating array of architectural styles, incredible old world cafes, savory local dishes and a seemingly endless variety of beers to try. I couldn’t get over how stupid I’d been as schoolboy on his first trip to Europe, intent to see only the things I’d been told to see. (continued below in Fondest Memory)
The year of Jacques Brel
by chicabonita
In 2003 Brussels pays tribute to a great musician, actor and director. See the great pictures of him in the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert. Have a look on these websides to learn more about him. There you also find suggestions for "Jacques Brel Walks":

Atomium
by chicabonita
Atomium and Mannekin Pis are surely the best known landmarks!
The sightseeing bus also stopped here, but I didn't get off the bus as I still have no idea what to see and do at the Atomium ...
