    EXCELLENT Belgian cooking

    by

I was a bit worried that I had chosen a hotel that was far from the centre, but I needn't have been. It's at most 10 to 15 minutes (depending on the traffic) by taxi, and being a little bit out means the streets are wider and you get more trees and sky than right in the centre.

(If you get a taxi there and he doesn't know the place, it's because the name changed a few years ago when a Danish brewery took it over, and locals still use the old name. Anyway, just tell your taxi it's across the road from the Basilica and he'll know instantly what you're talking about.)

Otherwise, the room was large, maybe slightly bare, but perfectly adequate, and I slept well, the people were kindly, helpful and efficient, and the food was much, much better than I had been expecting. (Judging by the numbers of local people in for dinner, it looked as if they felt the same.) This left me in a quandry. The food in the hotel (especially the "Waterzooi") being so good, it seemed lunacy to eat anywhere else, but if I always ate in I'd miss the chance to try Belgian cooking anywhere else.

(If you're staying there, be careful to have a look at the blackboard while you're having your breakfast. What's on every day changes, and if there's going to be, say, Waterzooi for lunch you don't want to miss it.)

There's an amazing range of beers behind the bar too. If you don't know what on earth to choose, ask a waiter to suggest something. They all speak excellent English.

Unique Quality: Quiet area, excellent food, a bit like an old-fashioned inn.

Directions: Across the road from the Basilica.
