From Southern England (Torquay) To Brussels to Amsterdam

by scoffy991177

Hello everyone! Hoping to get some advice on traveling to Brussels...
We will be in the south of England (Torquay to be specific) and will be traveling to Brussels. Our friends have a vehicle and will be able to drop us at a train station or airport if necessary.

-What is the most efficient way to get to Brussels from Torquay? We will only be spending one night and then moving on. Any specific details will help: train station, stops, which rail to use etc.

Thank you so much!
Alison

Well, you only have one train option: the Eurostar under the Channel, then onward to Brussels.

Book your tickets as far in advance as you can to get best prices, using he official website:

www.eurostar.com

Unless your friends are willing to drive you (which is very unlikely, as it's a very long way from Torquay and will take no less time than going by train, and possibly more) then you will need to take the train into London.

www.nationalrail.co.uk will give you times, details and fares.

You can buy the cheaper 'advance' fares up to 6pm at the station (in your case, Torquay) so I suggest you do so. Journey time is around 3 hours to London, with one change.

The Torquay train arrives at London Paddington station and the Eurostar leaves from London St Pancras. You will need Tube or taxi to travel between the two stations.

Check-in for the Eurostar closes 30 minutes before departure (you will go through passport control and security as if you were flying). Make sure you allow at least an hour before departure to collect your tickets from the fast-ticket machine or ticket office: there are often queues.

The Eurostar segment only takes around 2 hours.

The only feasible flying option, imo, would be Southampton>Brussels.

I don't know if your friends would drive you to Southampton airport (around 3 hours). Otherwise, you'd have to take the train...but that's a longer journey than going into London, at 3.5 - 4 hours with 2 changes.

Flybe operate the route. Best fares are booked well in advance, and rise the nearer you get to departure. www.flybe.com

One important addition: If going by train buy a Torquay - "London international" ticket. seat61 has the reason why this is important:

Banks are usually open from 9 a.m. to 3.30 p.m., Monday to Friday. Some are also open on Saturday mornings.

Take a tour bus ! It's really nice to see everything while you're there . Brussels is so lively ! It is brilliant for night life but also for peace as well . The people there really know how to enjoy themselves !

Manneken Pis

Beside the Atomium, the Manneken Pis is the only reason I wanted to visit Brussels. I saw it… It wass cute, but so small (less that 60 cm tall!!!)! I expected it much bigger. But I loved the footpath from here to the Grand Place.

on our way to the central place ("Grote Markt") we passed by these beautiful little streets, full of souvenir shops and restaurants. Here you´ll find the famous belgican choclate and all other typical stuff.
In the background of the picture are already buildings of the Grand Place.

I almost forgot to mention the Brewery Museum and the Chocolate Museum which are located at the south corner of the square. The former provides visitors an opportunity to sample different types of Belgian beer and the latter, chocolates of cuz.
