Whilst you are waiting for specific recommendations look at www.hostelworld.com and www.hostelbookers.com The vast majority of European hostels are listed on one or both sites.

There are plenty of cheap hotels around Gare du Midi/Zuid station, but 'm not sure I would want lo live there.

Near Zuidstation Southstation there are good/payable hotels.
Take Ibis Brussels Gare du Midi, walking distance from the trainstation, approx. 5 minutes, and you have good hotel.

Hi cvt,
Where do you need to be close to? As it's just 24 hours you may like to be closer to a major train station.
I stayed at Centre Van Gogh (CHAB) Hostel near Gare du Nord. It wasn't the cleanest but the rooms were warm with a sink in and it was relativley cheap. A bed in an 8-10 dorm is €18.50.
