From Brussels airport to Lille - what is the most convenient?

by j3r0nim

Hi! I am flying to Brussels on the 8th Feb and I should land around 8 AM in Brussels Airport, terminal M. I must reach Lille the fastest the possible, so I was wondering what type of transport is the best option? I heard there are Eurolines buses from Gare de Nord or Eurostar trains, but I don't know how to reach them and what's the price...I prefer to descend on gare Lille Flandres, not Lille Europe. I would be happy to receive some advice on that.

Hi
I don't know about the Eurolines bus but according to DB Bahn there is a rail terminal in the Brussels airport. A train leaves for Lille Europe at 08:36 arrives 10:12 (you can check http://www.bahn.com/ for schedules) Lille Flandres station is about 500 meters from the Lille Europe station.
Have a good trip,

Train is quite easy, and you should be able to get your ticket at the terminal. See www.nmbs.be for schedules.
To get to Lille Flandres it is best to stick to conventional trains. The trip planner at www.bahn.de might suggest taking a Eurostar, but this will be more expensive and not really faster, as you would arrive at another station, and have to deal with the check in at Brussel Zuid.
Using conventional IC trains the fastest you can get from the airport to Lille Flandres is 2 hours, but most connections require around 2 1/2 hours. Depending on when you leave you either go via Gent of via Tournai, but the ticket clerk at the airport will be able to give you a timetable.

In those days the island was known as the Island of Saint-Gorik. Carl of France decides to build a castrum (= a sort of fortress) on the island: Brussels is born. At the end of the 10th century, after the death of Carl, Low-Lorraine is taken over by Lambert of Leuven. In the middle of the 11th century Lambert 2nd Baldric decides to build a new castrum at Brussels. He also starts building the first city walls.

Festivals & Events

It is always a bonus to arrive at a tourist destination and find a festival co-incides with your stay. This happened to us whilst in Brussels and we enjoyed watching the parade of locals dressed in period dress for the Beer Festival held each September.

Brussels hosts Festivals and Events on most moths of the year. Some of interest are:

city sightseeing by bus

by chicabonita

The tour starts at the central station and takes you to all the main landmarks of Brussels. The bus stops 13 times at the different places and you can get on and off the bus as much as you want.

www.city-sightseeing.com I made the tour on a sunny November saturday. I sat in the open upper part as I didn't want the dirty windows on my pictures. But, jesus, after 1h30 it was quite cold! If you do it in the next months be sure to have proper winter clothes on. I'm still wondering that I didn't get a cold ...

by Krystynn

come to the world famous Grand-Place to chill out. Yes, this is indeed one of Europe's finest medieval squares... and the main tourist attraction of the city of Brussels. Magnificent Renaissance-styled houses formerly belonging to guilds and corporations (as I've been told) line the square.

On Sundays, this whole area turns into a lovely flower and bird market respectively. Others (like the locals and tourists alike) are seen spending their time wandering around and admiring the beautiful buildings.... Some were even spotted sitting down on one of the many terraces having a good Belgian beer. :-) At other times throughout the year, concerts and musical happenings are organized and, I guess THE most famous events that take place here are the annual Ommegang (a historical procession at the beginning of July) and the Flower Carpet Show.

Hm, I think I can stay here all day and never feel bored!
