train strikes/disruptions this week

by clareabee

hi guys

A couple of people mentioned on the Bruges page that there is a strike on the 18th (we will be home by then) but that there may also be disruptions this week - can anybody give me any further info/keep me updated.

We arrive in Brussels this thursday - 14th Oct, getting train to Ypres on Friday 15th (just for day) and same on Sat to Bruges.

All help/advice appreciated.

So far, I've only read about a strike on the 11th of October on the Dutch-language news sites. It will not affect international trains. The strike is for goods transportation (not persons).

On Tuesday 19th October, there will be a strike too. This concerns actions on Brussels-Midi (South) station which is the most important rail junction in the country.

Rail Europe Industrial Action in Belgium - 11 and 18 October 2010

We have been made aware that there may be a strike affecting Belgian rail services on Monday 11th October. This strike is not yet confirmed, but if it does go ahead, it will begin at 2200 on Sunday 10th October and end at 2200 on Monday 11th October.

We do not yet have details of how domestic Belgian services will be affected by this strike, however, Eurostar have confirmed that should the action take place, they will be unable to run any services into or out of Brussels Midi station during this time. Eurostar services to Lille may also be affected.

Further information on how rail services will be affected will be posted as soon as we receive it.

In addition, a general strike has been called in Belgium for 18 October. This will run from 2200 on Sunday 17 October until 2200 on Monday 18 October. Further information will follow as soon as possible.

If you think your journey may be affected, please continue to monitor the Service Updates page at www.raileurope.co.uk. Information will also be posted here on the Facebook discussion board.

Industrial action is confirmed to take place in France on Tuesday 12th October, starting at 20:00 on Monday 11th until 08:00 on Wednesday 13th October 2010.

Details of affected services will be available on www.infolignes.com from 16:00 on Sunday 10th October. Please note that this website is in French only. Full details should be available 24 hours before the strike and will be posted on www.raileurope.co.uk and on www.facebook.com/RailEuropeUK.

Good luck,
ElDesierto

Hi Clare,

The strikes are for cargotrains but the public transportation will get also the problems of it on Oct. 11 and 18th.

In my Belgian newspaper a unionspokesman said that it could also be problematic between the 11th and the 18th.
Hope you will not have much problems with the trains.
I'll cross my fingers for you.

P.

Travel Tips for Brussels

Chocolates and more Chocolates

by touraco

Chocolates and Waffles are most famous from Belgium and guess what I did? I bought 4 different brands of chocolates. It was really tempting, I walked into every chocolate shop and never leave the place empty-handed.

Just walk around the streets and you can find a lot of chocolate shops.

A FAVORITE VIEW!

by lmkluque

See the city from a rooftop. Somewhere near the gare du nord is a parking lot at the top of a tall building. The view is worth the price of parking your car. If you don't use a car, pretend you're going up to retrieve your car and check out the view.

Seeing Brussels from your computer

by melissa_bel

Do you miss Brussels? Do you want tio check how traffic is flowing? Or you just want to have a look at the Grand'Place? Maybe you just want to see what the weather is like?
La Tribune Bruxelloise, a Brussels' magazine, has different livestream webcams around Brussels, amongst them one on the Grand'Place.
I check it out almost everyday and watch people walk and gawk ;0) A great link!
http://www.tbx.be/webcams.html Catching the sound and light show on the Grand'Place cam when it's nightime in Brussels. Without the sound, unfortunately.

Manneken Pis

by JUNLI

Manneken Pis
Manneken Pis, a statue of a urinating boy. According to a legend, this boy was purported to have urinated on a bomb fuse thus saving the Town Hall from terrorists who planned to destroy the building. Today, he pees almost everywhere shamelessly with that boyish stance. And it is no surprise to catch some live performances along the streets as well. Manneken does not wear anything at all, except on holidays when he reluctantly puts on costumes and funky wigs.

Manneken does not perform alone; his female counterpart Jeanneken Pis hides herself at the very end of Getrouwheids alley, smilingly do what her friend can't possibly do. She was caged when I saw her, probably she always is, to avoid harassment.

Manneken Pis

Check out the little peeing boy - Manneken Pis...
He is a lot smaller than I expected but still worth having a quick look at.
There seems to be a few different stories about how this little boy statue managed to appear...these days he gets dressed up in various costumes sometimes which you will see on different postcards in Brussels... We bought some Belgian waffles nearby and they were great (although VERY sweet!!)...and I am sure we could have found them cheaper if we had gone away from this little touristy area though... ;)
