places for breakfast near sofitel le louise and in general

by clareabee

he guys we are staying at the sofitel Le louise on a room only basis and I am not too keen to blow 30 Euros each on breakfast!!! - are there any reasonably priced places nearby we can have a coffee and pastry or something nearby?

Also some suggestions for lunch and dinner - that don't cost the earth! - obviously appreciate it is a city so you pay more but don't want to fork out for mega expensive meals! - has anybody got any suggestions?

We will eat anything except sushi (that is my hubbie and not me!) - would prefer typical regional dishes.

Thank you!

I have no recommendations for specific places to eat in Brussels just a warning--DO NOT EAT IN THE GRAND PLACE--digusting food, EXPENSIVE and rude wait staff. In general, we found the restaurants we not very good at all in Brussels. I just ended up eating a bunch of waffles, chocolate and pomme frites the whole time.

I have been warned about grand platz...I don't think anywhere can be as expensive, disgusting or rude as barcelona - we had an awful time and hubby got food poisoning! Will have to do some research on the travel pages on here to see what I can find. I think it is good we are staying a 15 min walk from centre so may be more 'local' restaurants......I am not keen on chocolate so looks like it is frites for me!

For a nice breakfast you could go to le pain quotidian on Louisalane(Avenue Louise)or on the Zavel.

Travel Tips for Brussels

Tout petit !

by Klod5

Not very far from the Big Place, to the crossroads of small old alleys, it finds the most famous monument of Brussels probably: The Manneken Pis. It is surprisingly small (roughly 50 centimeter high). Iit is standing on a pedestal and provides a constant stream of water to the pan under him.
History tells that a rich business man of Brussels whose small son had disappeared enacted that if the boy was recovered living then he would construct the boy's statue in the position where he would be recovered. Apparently the boy had gotten lost merely in woods and an emergency expedition recovered it... occupied to urinate against a tree. The statue has a very special place in the hearts of the inhabitants of the district. One sees in the stores around a lot of retorts, of which some are bigger than the original.
That day, the statue was dressed, and one explained me that it is uen custom of people of the neighborhood..

We visited Brussels twice. ...

We visited Brussels twice. Once in 1995 and again in 1997. The city did't change much - it is still a great place to visit. The palace and park in the city center is beautiful. We walked a mile or two from our hotel to see the little boy peeing in the fountain. Once I saw it I couldn't understand why it is such a must see thing in Brussels. Don't go out of your way for this.

The space-age leftover from the 1958 World Fair, Atomium, has virtually become a symbol of the city. The Mimi Europe theme park, next door to the Atomuum, shows Europe in miniature.

I think my favorite thing to do in Brussels besides eating waffles is admiring the beautiful architecture, especially at the main square. Picture is of Brussels historical Museum located on the Grand Place (main square).

Brussels, Apr. 20-May 9? or same period each year

by Norali

Between April 20 and May 9, 2004:

Visit Laeken Royal Greenhouses for its tropical species (orchids, palmtrees, fern species... ) and also superb azaleas...

Laeken Greenhouses are also worth the glance regarding architecture. Glass and iron used together to give Greenhouses an Art Nouveau style.

If you plan to visit (return to) Brussels during mid April - early May, this is the time to see Laeken Greenhouses as it only opens once a year, at the same period... so ... You can check pics here:
