I spent 4 days at Ustel Hotel with a group of 10 people, all of us at double rooms. Rooms were dark and worn, but we expected it, because the hotel was cheaper than average. What we didn't expect is the claustrophobic lift, the smallest I have ever seen. Neither did we expect the absolute lack of professionality of the night porter, that answered with a "Je suis fatigué" when asked to unclose our firiends, which were trapped at the formerly mentioned lift. The area is not a good one, but we had no problems. The positive point about this location is that it's just opposite to a Metro station and very close to the Gare du Midi.
The only good characteristic is the bar hotel, quite cosy and served by friendly staff. The Grand Place is about 15 minutes walking from the hotel. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel! It's not a top-class hotel, but it went above and beyond my expectations for the price we paid! The gentleman who was on the front desk for most of our stay was pleasant, and always had a friendly 'bonjour' for us every time we entered or exited the hotel. The room and bathroom was clean, and comfortable. The TV had many channels, and even had movies and sitcoms in English, which was handy for us, since we didn't speak a word of French! The free buffet breakfast was better than I expected, with offerings of tea, coffee, water and various juices, as well as baguettes, yoghurts, cereals, fruit salad, pain au chocolat, croissants, various pastries, ham, cheeses, sausages, bacon and eggs. Location-wise, it's not in the centre of the tourist-attractions, but the main train station is just a short walk away, and it's extremely easy to catch the metro, trams or buses to where you want to get to. Definitely recommended for those on a tight budget!
